Why is it so complicated to play a friend in a regular online game?

Me and my buddy just wanted to play AL all stars vs NL all stars but can’t figure it out there playing online. Why is it so complicated? Why can’t I just start a game session and send him an invite. We ended up having to play each other in DD again because neither of us could figure it out. We both have been playing MLB the Show 10. We swear it hasn’t been this difficult in the past.
