The Reds long ago retired the number 24 in honor of Tony Perez, so even Ken Griffey Jr. Had to pick a new uniform number while he played there.

And yet, Jeimer Candelario is somehow wearing it in the live series card? It’s June 25th, SDS. Fix that. Especially since the egg hunt version doesn’t have him wearing 24.

Actually Tony said Jr could wear 24. But out of respect for Perez and love of his father, he wore his Dad's #30.

But yes it is really stupid, especially when you can see clear as day the number 3 on Jeimers picture for his LS card.

If I'm not mistaken his Easter card wears #3 as well. Really odd, not sure why it hasn't been fixed.

That is not what I remember. I remember Jr. commenting later that he was disappointed that Perez would not allow him to wear the #24 and Jr. saying something like 'it's just a number and I didn't think me wearing it would diminish anything Tony did here' ... or something like that.

Wow, that definitely not how I remember it. And I can't find any article one way or another. But considering Tony knew Jr since he was a kid, I find it extremely difficult to believe it played out that way. Not saying it didn't, but from what I know of Perez it just doesn't sound right and I think the city would have made a much bigger deal about it being pretty petty.

I also think if it played out that way, I'd be finding more articles about it. But the only ones I've found from 2000 just say he will wear 30 because 24 was going to be retired.

    But... It's not petty IMO.
Once a number is retired it should stay retired. Making exceptions for that is hugely disrespectful of the player who earned it being retired.
If Griffey wore number 3 and went to the Yanks would they unretire it for him?
All retired numbers should be equally sacrosanct in my opinion. Asking for an exception is narcissistic.
I know others disagree, but I'm sure many players who have had their number retired feel this way.

Big difference between the Babe who's been dead for a very long time and can't give blessing vs a guy who watched the Kid grow up.

That trade was the trade of the century for the city at the time, to deny him the request would've been major news.

At best it could've been a private convo between them, and told him no. But again I see no evidence anymore that Jr publicly complained, again that would be a huge [censored] in the punch bowl for what was an extremely big deal.

I'd love someone to unearth a real answer to what went down, but the only known facts are 24 was retired and Jr wore 30 cause of his dad.
