Diamond Card Count

I went back and added up the juiced/special diamonds, as in not live series cards, over the course of mlb21, mlb22 and mlb23. Here are the results.
MLB21: 1022 total, 193 99s
MLB22: 1154 total, 274 99s
MLB23: 1985 total, 494 99sAlthough people may have wanted more cards this shows how much overkill this year’s game was compared to the previous 2 installments. Personally, I feel gameplay was the best of the 3 this year but content was by far the worst in regards to duplicate cards, watered down 99s, and a significant decline in card art. MLB24 needs to do better and be better. I truly hope SDS has listened to community feedback and makes some changes so the game isn’t a grind fest for so many redundant cards.
-
Beware what you wish for because the cards they stop making will be Willie Mays and Hank Aaron while the cards they keep making will be Jackson Chourio and Marcelo Meyer.
-
@fubar2k7
Haha, it better not be the case. The all time greats need to be in there. The young stars can be promoted as well but not 5 versions of each. Quality over quantity.
-
Hey, stop stealing my bit!
-
@TripleH-4481_PSN The fantasy cards for prospects and drafted players out of college plus 3 each for Schwarber, De La Cruz and Vlad Jr are contributing heavily towards that 494. Those college players and prospects could end up the next Brien Taylor or Billy Ashley yet they make up how many of those cards since you were kind enough to tabulate them for us.
-
@fubar2k7
Oh and that’s exactly what I’m getting at. One version is plenty. I get that it’s pure fantasy and it does promote the young players which certainly have their appeal. I just want better balance, less duplicates, and more credit to under appreciated legends.
-
Plus as you can see the jump from 21 to 22 was reasonable. The jump from 22 to 23 was ridiculous.

A little explanation as to why: As of the End of Season 5 (12/20/23), there were only 879 active Flashback/Legend Cards (4, 5, CORE) available for use.
-
@TripleH-4481_PSN Look at all the 2023 postseason cards they churned out. How many of those are 99 off a couple games. Some of them are duplicated cards for players who had a previous 99. Smith, Realmuto and Seager all come to mind.
-
@fubar2k7
Oh I understand how that can happen but even with that the jump in cards and 99s specifically was crazy. It was like Oprah….you get a 99 and you get a 99….everybody gets a 99….and then you get another 99 because you got a 9th inning single. Point being it’s a video game and they can justify giving a 99 to anybody. If the game is gonna be flooded with 99s at least diversify it. If it’s gonna get crazy then get really crazy. Give a 99 to to bench guy that got a hit, or the relief pitcher that didn’t give up a run, give a ton of variety as much as the current contracts allow. Either cut back on the volume and make 99s mean something or go all in and give it to everyone. I just don’t want to end up with 5 schwarbers ever again.
-
@TripleH-4481 Or give a pitcher who went 0-1 a 99 DH card.
-
@fubar2k7
Yeah, but I gotta say at least the Wainwright card at DH was fun. I’m okay with ridiculous fun cards if they are gonna go with quantity over quality.
-
I think it's funny that people were complaining, back in 17 I think, about 99 0VR Pepe Alazar being an overrated card. Yet people are OK with someone that's mainly a DH (Voglebech and Schwarber) have 99s.
-
@X-FREEZE-OFF-X_PSN Agree. And no comment about Wainwright who at the time was a better hitter than any Willie Mays card they had put out at the time.
-
@fubar2k7
That’s true and just goes to show that either legends were largely ignored or those in charge of content had no clue who most of them were or how good they were. The game should promote up and coming players to grow the base but a few more nods to the all time greats would go a long way.

How about the 99 OVR Jo Adell FS card a few years back. Dude batted .203 last season and has a yearly avg of .214.

I’m fairly new to DD but I’m gonna guess they had a few 99s for Aristides Aquino.

Now that was funny
If that really did happen my guess would be he had a 50 in everything and a 178 in arm strength to pull up his overall lol

Yep there are quite a few guys they boosted that never panned out. Remember Nate Pearson, pitcher for the Blue Jays, was a reward in the extreme program a couple years back. He had a juiced 99 card to put him on par with guys like Pedro Martinez or Nolan Ryan. They are basically the same, right? The real issue is that they have made 99s irrelevant. I wish they would save 99s for the true top tier players and then scale the rest back. Also scaling attributes back to 100 peak with the only ones being over 100 saved for guys like Ruth. It would rebalance the game and make players feel unique.

I've said multiple times thst TRUE 99s should be reserved for Program rewards, H2H rewards, and, Collection rewards.
Any other Diamond should be capped at 95-98.
But then you have people complaining that the grind isn't worth it.
You want TN/MA Diamonds: 85-95s then the Lightning is a 99.
You want Future Stars Diamonds: 85-95s and then one 99 at the end.
Same with TA Programs.
