Actually Ohtani will be a 2 million $ DH until he's 39 when he gets paid lol. This contract just gets crazier by the day. Meanwhile the Dodgers can go out and get more players

But will that hamstring them in 10 years when they start paying 68 million for a player no longer there? Is that still counted as player salary?
-
It still counts toward their payroll every year, just like how the Mets are still paying Bobby Banilla years after he retired and it still counts toward their payroll
-
@sbchamps17
Payroll yes, but i am not sure if his deferred money will count against the CBT after he is retired?.... for example I do not think the Reds are being penalized for Griffey's deferred money in regards to their tax...and same for Bonilla and Mets.Edit... The deferred salary wil count for next ten years but due to the deferred "present day value" (inflation), the CBT cap hit is lowered:

I find it crazy that they're allowed to do that to contracts, they should be forced to pay him 70 million dollars just because of the absurd amount of money he's going to be getting, it's too much for 1 player who won't even be pitching this season and will probably end up being a reliever in a couple years which would make him unable to be a 2 way player anymore. He probably won't even be able to be a two way player for the entire 10 year contract, sorry for my rant but I hate him with a passion

Why? Are you an Angels fan mad that he is leaving or a Toronto fan mad about the misreporting?
Maybe I just don't pay enough attention but I am baffled at what he could have done to make someone "hate him with a passion."

No player deserves that kind of money period especially since they will be paying practically nothing for him for the next 10 years and then 68 million for the next X amount of years after that which will very easily put them over the luxury tax and then can't rebuild because they have that money on the books

But, why do you care so much? Why can’t you be happy for a guy who has worked his [censored] off to become the best he can be? Why do you care how his contract is laid out?
The Dodgers are making a huge amount of money off this deal (even more now that 68m of Ohtani’s salary is deferred).
Were you this upset when Griffey Jr. gave up his salary so the Mariners could get better players? (Which really didn’t work, btw).
There’s no good reason to be upset with Ohtani or the Dodgers over this deal.
Are you this upset that Tom Cruise is making 100m from his last movie?
Be happy for Ohtani. He has worked hard. Very hard. And, he is very talented. He deserves what he is worth. And, he is worth (monetarily) whatever a team is willing to pay him.
-
@Dolenz
Ohtani's OB% has increased substantially due to him getting hit by pitch every other game. lol -

Then hate the Dodgers for offering the contract. Was Ohtani supposed to turn it down?
-
His luxury tax salary is $46 million so while he gets $2 million the team payroll is hit $46 million over the 10 years. They must have some formula and over the final 10 years the team will be hit X amount of dollars against the luxury tax salary for him to either play a few more years someplace else or play in LA or to just chill at home in Japan with his new dog.

Ohtani truly is a unicorn because what he chose to do with his contract is something he is uniquely able to do. No other MLB superstar earns nearly as much as he does in endorsements. He would have been a Dodger out of high school or when he first came to the states had the NL had the DH rule. He is doing what all sorts of kids fantasize that they would do on their favorite team and I am all here for it. Dodgers should sign Snell and Yoshinobu, trade for Glasnow and Arozarena, and trade for Burnes and Adames next. Spring training cannot get here soon enough.
Oh they should also get Hader just to be safe.

Why only DH? He can play the outfield if needed too.

Figured he would only DH. Wouldn't playing the outfield put stress on his arm/elbow?

That's true. I didn't think about him having to throw to home plate. Good call.
-
Ohtani? Who cares. The Pirates are signing Rowdy Tellez. Now THAT'S news.
-
Theres still more to this contract, if the Dodgers trade or fire personal then Ohtani can opt out of his contract. Lol Dodgers.
