Baseball Quotes
-
I like hearing what MLB players have to say about baseball. Back in the 90s, I sat on the side of a dugout while Tom Kelly and I had a conversation about the game (this was during batting practice). He was really tired of how much of a business the game had become. That was a memorable conversation. Since then, I've been drawn to quotes about what players have to say about the game and playing the game.
How many quotes can we gather as a community?
I'll start off with one from Mickey Mantle.
"During my 18 years I came to bat almost 10,000 times. I struck out about 1,700 times and walked maybe 1,800 times. You figure a ballplayer will average about 500 at-bats a season. That means I played 7 years without ever hitting the ball."
-
I'm assuming I'll be banned if I quote John Rocker so I won't.
This is a good quote about baseball and life.
"I think about the cosmic snowball theory. A few million years from now the sun will burn out and lose its gravitational pull. The earth will turn into a giant snowball and be hurled through space. When that happens it won't matter if I get this guy out." Bill Lee.
-
My favorite? "Give em the heater, Rickey". Or rookie? Shoot, its ricky ii think lol
-
"Life is too short to worry about anything. You had better enjoy it because the next day promises nothing."
-- Eric "The Red" Davis -
I'll add another one.
“Baseball is like church. Many attend, few understand.”
― Leo Durocher -
-Baseball is ninety percent mental. The other half is physical.
That sticks out because my HS Coach use to use it all the time.
And -Fans don’t boo nobodies, Reggie Jackson.
As an Astro fan I really love that one.
And probably one of the more famous ones, Baseball is the only field of endeavor where a man can succeed three times out of ten and be considered a good performer.” – Ted Williams

These are great, especially the first one! Here is some history on the first one:
“Baseball is ninety percent mental, and the other half is physical”
"Baseball is 90 percent mental” has been cited in print since at least 1974. Kansas City Royals outfielder Jim Wohlford was cited in April 1974 for saying::
“Ninety percent of this game is half mental.”
“Ninety percent of this game is half mental” was credited to baseball manager Danny Ozark (1923-2009) in April 1977. “Ninety percent of this game is half mental” was also credited to baseball manager Yogi Berra (1925-2015) in January 1979. Berra usually receives credit for the line, but Wohlford said it first. “Baseball is ninety percent mental, and the other half is physical” is a popular variation of the line.

And -Fans don’t boo nobodies, Reggie Jackson.
As an Astro fan I really love that one.
We boo because they cheated. Not because they are good.

Believe me. There are some individual players like Reggie Jackson and Barry Bonds that probably got booed more often than not. But short of a result from team rivalries there are very few individual players that are roundly booed across the country. Nobody is booing every Nationals or Braves player on every road trip. The reason every single player from 2017 - 2018 Astros is brutally booed across the entire country has nothing to do with talent. It is because they cheated and in no way deserve their rings and other accolades. This booing will likely last the remainder of their careers and the scandal will likely cost them hall of fame votes.

But it all means nothing. Those players are just the same as they were, the Astros have been better since, W/L wise, and only like 3 are left on the Astros and the others around the league dont get near the boos as even current Stros who had nothing to do with it. just a bunch of uneducated, dumb fans.
And to add, every time one becomes a free agent teams rush out to sign them.

The Twins were the only ones in on Correa. Springer plays in Canada.
The Astros tanked for a decade to accumulate high draft picks. Obviously they are a talented team that didn't NEED to cheat. They just took the easier way to win a tight race against Yankees and a barely beat the Dodgers.
The reason the Red Sox don't get the same heat is because they didn't cheat to the same extent AND they were clearly the better team in 2018.
And to your final point. What is more likely? That the fans of the other 29 teams are dumb and uneducated. Or the fans of the Astros. A team that plays in Houston. A city in Texas (not exactly a region recognized for intelligence). Are baseball savants and the only ones that get it?

This reminds me of a game we went to this April - well, the opposite of this, but as I read this, the memory sprung to life.
We were in Seattle and decided to catch a Mariners game. My wife and I hadn't been to a game in Seattle in nearly 20 years, so we were eager to attend the game.
We sat in front of a young family. Their son, maybe 7-8 years old kept asking very insightful questions about what was happening on the field. The thing that struck me was it was his mother who was explaining the game to him and not his father. She had a very deep knowledge of the game. I had to purse my lips a few times so I wouldn't blurt out the answer to the young boy's question, and let his mother explain it - after all, that is one of the joys of being a parent.
I couldn't help but speak with this woman after the game. I congratulated her on how she was teaching her son the game and she shared with us her love of the game. She told me she wished she could teach her son better and I let her know she was doing a great job. I encouraged her to teach her son how to keep score and learn the fielder's position numbers. She got excited because she hadn't thought about doing that.
We left that game with a smile in our hearts because we enjoyed the game and had the opportunity to sit around some great fans of the game.
We've been to plenty of games where the attendees weren't fans, they were just there to watch some entertainment. It makes the game much better when there are fans there.

KMA buddy. Let's see Rice University known as the Harvard/Yale of the West. MD Anderson where most come for cancer treatment. Oil/Chemical refineries. I guess those are all stupid people. Fact is Texas can stand alone without any other state. Arizona and desert/cactus offer what exactly?

Well clearly clueless about Texas. Houston, home to NASA and one of the most prestigious Medical Centers in the World. Not sure who out of these millions moving here every year are under the impression Texas is a place of little intelligence. Clearly uneducated people that know nothing about the region, probably think its dirt and horses too. And Astros didnt tank for a decade. They started to fall off in 09 when those players they traded their prospects for got old and retired, because they dont have the TV money like some teams to just reload. So they did things the way they had to. They werent awful until 2011 and by 2015 were back to there pre rebuilding years strength of pretty much always having a winning record since the mid 90's. Maybe not WS contenders through that stretch, but competitive. So 4 years at most of tanking, in which they missed on half their first round picks, heck I think one just made his MLB debut with another team this year.
And yes Yanks, Sox and most other teams did the same thing. Beltran didnt bring that stuff from the North East to Houston and tell Houston they were way behind the League in that regards for nothing. The only team gonna take the fall was gonna be Houston because it would have been a killer to MLB for the precious Sox and Yanks to have been involved. Anyone that really thinks different is an Fin idiot.

When are you guys down there going to wake up to the fact it’s back to irrelevancy again for you? I get it, it was a super exciting couple months being on sports center and hearing the words “Houston” said out loud in other cities but those days are over. Rice University can be the wish version of whatever you want, Harvard is still Harvard. Yale is still Yale, Texas is still irrelevant. It is funny to hear Texas considered “west” during a breakdown of how smart people are down there tho, cheers for that. Those west coast beaches am I right?
