Are the Padres cursed or just really THAT bad?

All of the above is my guess
Hahaha, yeah I guess so. I figured somebody would have an opinion on this. The Dodgers proved this weekend that they are in a different stratosphere and if they played a 15 game series they'd win 15 games. I just don't get it. The Pads loaded up and I've never seen Petco so electric. They win 8-1 and look like conquerors. Since then they've been outscored 26-6 and look like a last place team.

It comes down to belief. the dodgers have had that all year and it has progressed beyond belief to "knowing".padres arent there yet, they believe but they arent to the point where they "know" it yet. its why they struggle, and why they wont make it far in the playoffs cause the mets and braves "know" and the phils are getting there. Its the same in the AL. The yankees and astros both "know" it and will most likely meet in the alcs because of it.

Great points. At this point I don't see the Pads making the playoffs. They have no pitching. Just 5 starters who all should be great but just aren't.
And the fact that Tatis has spent as .ugh time on the IL in his career as he has on the field is rather telling. It's a shame. They would be a really fun team if they didn't keep tripping over their own feet.
I'd love to hear from some Padres fans. Again, I would love to post in here in 2 months and say I was totally wrong. I just don't see them being a winning ball club..
-
Funny how Padres fans chanted of "40 more years" after they won the NLCS in 84. Sorry, but I find it hilarious that somehow the Cubs won the world series first, and the Padres are still 0 for the franchise.
-
Chemistry think with all that talent not a lot of guys willing to put team first and worried about getting “theirs” just my imo usually teams with tons of egos are not all that
-
The Pads will be paying off Ray Kroc’s karmic debt for quite some time.
-
Pitching and defense wins championships.
Padres will never win a championship if they think they can win without.
The reason the Dodgers are doing so well is pitching. They are consistently strong. In the past they failed to win due to pitching collapse. But they've seemed to have fix that.
-
What owl said plus the Dodgers were playing with a little more motivation this weekend. They were playing for Vin.
-
If the Pads make the playoffs, a short series with good pitching could change everything. The problem with the optics of a big trade like Soto and Bell is, they could hit and be effective on offense and still not change much. As fans we love the big names and trades aslt the deadline, but so many lesser named players get key hits at certain times and next thing you know Steve Pierce is receiving a WS MVP. The Dodgers are fundamentally sound and play good ball. Maybe given another shot in the playoffs, we may see the Bob Melvin effect play a part and try to bring some stabilty ro that SD Ptching Staff.

Did anyone here the ESPN announcer, I think is was the color commentary guy, on yesterday's game after Taylor caught the line drive for the first out of the sixth inning? If you have MLB.TV go fast forward to it.

This is not a Padres hate thread. I live in SD and wish them all the success in the world. But are they cursed to have awful sports because of the great weather or what? They go and load up on talent and then get demolished by both the Rockies and Dodgers.
They desperately need offense all year and then they get it and their pitching falls apart.
Tatis is getting paid 340 Million to dance in the dugout because he can't stay on the field.
Last year they were power ranked #2 to start the season and had an abysmal collapse and ended under .500.
So do they ever really have a chance? Are they cursed, managed and run poorly? What is the deal?
What are the two things the San Diego Padres and San Diego Studios have in common?
- There both located in San Diego
- ????????????
-
Maybe the Brewers had it right. Hader just blew a 3 run lead and the Padres look like a cellar dwelling joke. I'm sorry Pads fans. I think I jinxed you because when they pulled off these trades I thought to myself, maybe this is the year. When will I learn?
I was hoping this rant would bite me in the rear. Nice job Manny Machado. I hope I'm wrong.
I realize it's odd hearing this from a Cards fan but I grew up in SD and wish they could have a winning tradition..

Grandslam Diego needs to be revived.
-
And now Tatis is suspended for 80 games.
-
Cursed apparently

There was 84 and 98. You never know, they could always lose a third time.
Sorry, I used to live at naval housing near the Murph in 84. Since then I've decided to be disillusioned by the Angels.

Don't be sorry...you get it. And that's cool. I lived in that same area in college, right behind the stadium market and would walk to games between 99-02 before the move to Petco.
So the Padres bats start going, they win a few games in a row, score 30 runs in 3 games and boom Tatis is suspended. A 340 million dollar weapon, decommissioned yet again. He has yet to complete a season.
The Tatis conundrum:
My biggest beef with Tatis last year was his flash getting in the way of substance. Of course I love the sliding into the splits, the matrix limbo move to get out of the way of a fastball and the crazy leap frog fielding methods. Its great theatre. The reason Tatis is special is he is part ballplayer, part acrobat along with his speed and prodigious power. But he constantly got hurt as a result of these antics, often times unnecessarily. But the way he played like a [censored] hurt little leaguer down the stretch, dogging plays in the outfield, throwing tantrums in the dugout really showed his age. It's all fun and flash when you're winning, start to lose and he really shut down. Well, that's all forgivable. He's a kid and he make mistakes. I'm not even condemning him for the steroid use or the wreckless motorcycle accident. I can hardly throw stones given some of my behavioral antics in my 20s.
What it comes down to ultimately is having a winning mind. Say what you will about Jeter being overrated, he didn't pull stunts like this. Imagine a young man in his early 20s, suddenly a world champion, superstar bachelor in New York City. He should have gone nuts but instead he simply played ball and won rings.
Once again...I think the Padres are cursed. Or simply run very poorly.
-
Is it forgivable? for a 20 year old it might be, for a 300million dollar man? Harper and Soto came in the league this young,Acuna too(and others) you don't see these antics from them.

Well, they are in San Diego. One of the lowest lying fields in the country. The outfield is pretty expansive. The weather is cool, there isn't much wind and when there is it come in to the stadium. The air density restricts outgoing power and helps ball movement from a pitchers hand.
Petco is a pitcher and contact hitters dream stadium. Hosmer sucked in part because of this. Peavy and Hoffmann excelled because of this. Giles made a career out of this.
The team needed bats for an end of season push. The air gets cooler in October and any home games will be about pitching and playing small ball. Away games need diversity. Soto probably won't do well in SD. He is build for NY or Bean Town, maybe Denver or Philly. Same with Tatis. Tatis in LA would be far better than Tatis in SD. Benentendi would have been a better choice in SD.
Petco is and will continue to be about pitching and small ball.
