direction arrow shows up right before pitch

During online PvP, when im pitching and right before i select a pitch and direction, a red small arrow, inside the batter's pci, shows up pointing to a certain spot in the pci. Exactly what is this?

If you’re about to start your pitch before you hit the button or move your stick, they can press R2 and it’ll basically stop you from starting your pitch until they release it or the timer on their side runs out.

With the addition of PCI lock this year, pressing R2 so you can lock pci is a "meet in the middle" solution to the spamming R2 and Quik pitch arguement that took place last year. If i am not mistaken that thread was 13+ pages of each side presenting thier case. I think this was closest possible solution without effecting the gameplay.
