Kirk Gibson should be a Tiger
-
Yes, Gibby had an iconic home run for the Dodgers, but he should be a Tiger legend. But I guess the Dodgers need more legends since they have so few.
-
All his best seasons were in Detroit, but his lone MVP was in LA. I imagine there should be cards from both.
-
You can still put him on your tigers theme team, I know I will. Its hard to reveal him as anything else but a dodger when that homerun is probably a top 3 most viewed play in baseball history. It's literally shown all the time
-
Lol sure we will get several variations of his cards, some have four different cards in the game
-
Outside of Puckett (LOL) and Olerud last year, all of the pre-release legend announcements typically get 2-3 cards in the game.
-
He had more good years with the tigers, but he had his best single season with the dodgers. It just depends on which route SDS decides to take, since a career card would likely be in a tigers uniform while a single season card would be based on 1988 in a dodgers uniform.
-
I'm sure he will get Tigers cards in the build up to his eventual MVP card
-
Obviously I'm a Tiger fan, but it was just a gut punch to see the video of him being released as a Dodger legend. His HR against Gossage in the 84 WS was just a legendary in my eyes. Oh well, I hope they do eventually release a card with him in the Old English D.
-
I think an 88 MVP card wouldn't be all that much better than a card based on his 85 season. Especially if power is derived from slugging, where his slugging was actually higher in 85

This. We don't even know what Gibson cards we will get yet. If he played the most for the Tigers I am sure he has a chance at having the most cards for that team.
-
Dodgers fan here so I'm pumped to see Gibson in Dodger Blue. However as a baseball fan SDS needs to give his Detroit fan base some love. Based on how they are hyping him up Gibson will get a Dodgers MVP, 255 HRs is nothing to scoff at but what I hope they do is give him a low tier diamond early like maybe a Veteran or breakout Detroit card 88-91 then a mid tier 95-97 Prime Detroit card capped off with the Dodgers 99 MVP from 88. And he will have decent speed and stealing as well with almost 300 stolen bases. I hope they do right by both fan bases. Or what they could do is make him an evolution card that has quite a few cards like Miggy and Scherzer had. Either way he will be on my All time Dodgers team build no matter what card his best is
-
As a lifelong Dodgers fan myself for over 40 years, I remember both of those WS homers. Of course 88 was a moment I cherish because I watched that with my dad. But 84 was so cool because of the mics on the managers. I'll never forget Sparky saying he don't want to walk you.
Super stoked to have Gibby for sure . -

He’s going to get multiple cards just like every other legend. At least of those will be as a Tiger.

It wasn't just an iconic home run, it was an MVP season. Dodgers don't get to or win the WS without Gibby. As Scully said, he lit the fire the entire season until he was too injured to start. And his home run is number one in baseball history. And he did have great seasons in Detroit too so he'll get a card there I'm sure.
Anyways I don't know what his exact stats will look like but he should have 125 clutch.

There's no arguing it as one of the most iconic homers in history. I think there are a handful that belong in that conversation.
Carlton Fisk 1975 WS game 6
Bill Mazeroski 1960 WS Game 7
Joe Carter 1993 WS Game 6
David Freese 2011 WS Game 6
Kirby Puckett 1991 WS Game 6
Bobby Thompson 1951 Pennant winnerHank, Babe, Maris, McGuire, Bonds all have record breaking homers in the conversation.
But to your point, Gibby was more than just an iconic swing that year. His HR and Year was similar to the Willie Mays catch in 1954. It energized an underdog and changed the complexion of the series. It was inspired, baseball romanticism at its best.

What made the HR for the dodgers in 88 was he was hurt and could barely run, was not expected to play or hit at all. The dodger were not expected to win a game against the A's or the Mets. They differently were not suppose to make the playoffs at all. That just makes it that much more special at least for dodger fans.

Between Gibby and Orel is why the Dodgers made and won the WS in 88 and Mike Scioscia HR vs the Mets in the NLCS

Yeah, they don't get anywhere without the bulldog's historic season. Scioscias homer helped. And Mickey Hatcher who replaced Gibson in game 1 of the world series had two home runs. He only had two in the entire regular season. And don't forget they had a great manager that year, Lasorda.
