The amount of time I've spent gaming, due to current events, has increased over the past two years. I had to deal with tendinitis in my fingers last year because of it, but now I face something worse.

My left hand (the one that moves the PCI around when I'm batting, for example) has been experiencing these numbness spells, where the numbness shoots up and down my hand, from my wrist area to my fingers, usually the middle and index fingers. It may have happened to me while gaming, but I also specifically remember it happening to me when I was holding the steering wheel at 12:00 with my left hand and holding my phone up and swiping the screen with my left thumb.

I am a woman in her 20s. Not the usual age demographic for carpal tunnel syndrome. So even though I may have caught it in its early stages, it's really scaring me. I've read it usually starts in one hand before it occurs in both, but I don't know for sure because they tell you different things everywhere you search.

I am a student, and so I must spend a lot of time working on my computer. This is especially true as it is my senior year and I have hard classes that require a lot of writing and, thus, typing on my laptop.

With this post I am reaching out to anyone who also suffers or has suffered from this condition for guidance and advice. What should I do?

Sorry to hear that. It's understandable that you are worried but carpal tunnel is totally treatable. I would definitely contact an orthopedic specialist and try to figure it out early on. Could be a brace or splint or even some simple stretches could do the trick.

It’s fairly common for those that use computers a lot or play video games which I do both and I have been experiencing it since my early 20s. Treatment can range depending on the severity. I am just a wuss and won’t anything about it until it gets to the point where I won’t be able to hold a cup in my hand. My wife wears a wrist brace when using a computer or playing a video game. My brother-in-law had to have surgery.

Definitely see a specialist. And in the meantime, look up ergonomic solutions for your time on the computer. I fought this a while ago from typing day and night (both for work and for my hobbies) and when it was cold, I would come inside, warm up, but my hand stayed ice cold for an extra 20 minutes, and I had those elbow pains too. I had to change my setup to reduce the strain.

Need to build up your finger strength. I know it sounds silly but it's a must. I'm 37 and have been playing video games since I was 7 (Nintendo) and have been on a computer since I was 10. Working from home the past 4 years as well.

Also played outside everyday as a kid, played sports through high school and (try) to keep my muscles from getting weaker as I get older. Nothing crazy.

Grab the groceries in your fingers and carry them around for a little bit, grip vices work as well. Stress balls. Just get your hands stronger.

And of course the obvious...if you're fingers hurt, stop doing things that hurt them until you build up your strength. If it means giving up video games, so be it. Don't wanna be walking around like the guy from Scary Movie when you're 50 lol

I mean first off if you tap your wrist palm facing up does it hurt (tinel sign) or press your back of each hand together (phalen) I includded the names so google it. second take it easy on gaming, buy a wrist support for your computer, and if you want use NSAIDS and wear a brace only at night though. then go to an ortho hand doctor, but frankly any PCP. at best theyll give you some cortisone injection.its a pandedmic though so keep that in mind. but yeah its more than likely tendonitis.

I have found a dictation feature on Microsoft Word that functions similarly to voice-to-text. It has relieved the duties of my hand somewhat, but it sometimes misunderstands my southern accent. Since I have a class on Korean history, I have to type in the names myself, but that’s fine. I’ve also been wearing a brace at night.

I started getting some pains in my wrist and thumb on my right hand while the playing the game a few months back. I also play bass guitar so I became very concerned about doing irreparable damage to my hands that would hinder my ability to enjoy my 2 favorite hobbies. I took a week off from both and bought a wrist brace. It helped a little bit, but then I bought a nicer controller with paddles on the back that I've mapped to the front buttons and it's relieved a lot of the strain I was putting on my hands. I don't think that would help in your case but you should look into your options for minimizing stress on your joints, muscles, tendons etc. Also see a specialist now before it gets worse. The earlier you figure out a treatment plan the better.

I seem to be a violent “swinger” and the consistent hard squeezing of the x button when batting lead to chronic tendinitis in my elbow that bothered me most of the last year ( bicep, tricep attachments). I had to reprogram the x button to the R trigger , see a chiropractor, and ultimately take a couple weeks off to get it to calm down ( took me a long time to figure out the root of the pain)

So I definitely agree with the guy above about strengthening those muscles and taking some time away from gaming. It will be there when you get it calmed down.

    Good luck.

No, not really any pain, just this weird numbness. What I felt (and haven't since last Friday) was just in my left hand.

So you have a Bellinger kind of controller swing. I do like it violent. I do a leg kick in the air when under pressure, so I’ll call it a Justin Turner controller swing.

It is incredibly foolish to come here seeking medical advice. It is amazing people can lack judgment so severely, but it explains a lot about you and current events. It is truly unfortunate you didn’t learn how to think in college. Go to the doctor. And good luck out there, you’re going to need it.

My thumb is bruised on my swing finger. I'm thinking it's like a Sheffield circa 1993 swing.

I’m sure the lunch money was already given to “stop the steal”-ing of it.

And yes, many, but they’re beyond the scope of this forum.

Learn to hold the stick in a pinch grip as opposed to thumb only.

But as others have said. Medical advice only.
