OMG. Now with a middle infield of Semien and Seager the rangers are trying to contend maybe? Hopefully? That is crazy to me. I am trying to be happy because it is a good move for baseball but sad because the Yankees have spent a solid 0 bucks in the offseason.

The last time they overpaid for a shortstop on a 10 year deal it didn't work out too well for them, and Arod was a lot better. It has been about 20 years since that deal was made so maybe they're in a better position financially, but that is a lot of money to tie up between Seager, Semien and Gray.

️) Rusty Greer.The point i was trying to make was that a team is made up of over 20 players. Investing a lot of money into one guy won't necessarily lead to a championship, or even a winning season. Arod definitely put up great stats for 3 years, but the Rangers never won more than 73 games. In 2004, the year after he left, they won 89.
Arod was better than Seager, and he couldn't make enough of a difference for them to keep him for even half of that 10 year deal. I was hoping the Yankees would be able to get Seager, but for 10 years and over 300 million I'm glad they didn't. I've spent the better part of 20 years now waiting for bad contracts to expire just so Cashman and Steinbrenner could sign more deadweight. It's usually not a pretty sight by year 2-3 of those mega deals.

The biggest difference is the farm system. Back then it was a wasteland and the payroll was already to the point that the contract just killed any possibility of adding to the team. You now have around a top ten farm with several pitching prospects, especially Jack Leiter, who should be up pretty quick. And the payroll before these signings going into next year was only around 29 million so there's still room to add some pieces.

Also, the majority of that 29 million for next year comes off the books then as Andrus and Odors final payments.
