Honus question
-
Wagner looks awesome. All the new cards look awesome ( Kershaw not so much with only 107 h/9 as a touted "big collection") content is great today.
My question is, why does honus have diamond defense? I can't wait to use the card and all, but he had over 800 errors in his career and is near the top all time in the category. Am I missing something?
Serious question.

IDK maybe he made some awesome play or something that they heard about and they are like, "hmm yep. looks to me like he gets diamond fielding just for that." That is dumb though.

No idea. Just the name value I would assume. Not like anyone alive ever saw the guy play to say if he was good or bad in the field.
-
I blame the 800+ errors on his equipment. Have you seen his glove?

what type of errors were they and how did the see errors vs hits then.

i just put him at 2nd base and call it a day.. he is the first card ill go after.
-
They used to have to deal with rocks and pebbles on the infield… So he may have been a top defensive player for this time.

Kids in the Dominican use milk cartons for gloves and they do pretty good once they get leather in their hands LOL

Errors have gone down and fielding percentage has gone up throughout history as equipment and field conditions have gotten better. He was above average by even that rudimentary stat. B-Ref estimates he was worth over 20 WAR as a fielder, for what it's worth.
-
Ask Bill James, as far as defensive win shares, Wagner was 2nd only to Ozzie.
-
I wanted a Brian Giles for the Buccos reward
-
The diamond defense was just a bonus for Honus I guess

He had a much higher fielding % than his peers. Even though he had a lot of errors, so did the other guys. His range was also at the top of the charts. And, his card is awesome.

This card being “free” is a huge win for the community. He’s absolutely one of the best cards in this game. Really can’t complain about fake attributes anymore, especially fielding. Hell, the gave Schwarber diamond defense.

Back in his day, players could get credited with an error for almost anything. You are stealing: that’s an error. You are playing music too loud: that’s an error, right away. Driving too fast: error. Slow: error. You are charging too high prices for sweaters, glasses: you get an error. You undercook fish? Believe it or not, error. You overcook chicken, also error. Undercook, overcook. You make an appointment with the dentist and you don't show up, believe it or not, error, right away.
