Billy Williams/Baseball scoring conundrum
-
So I had a question since this has only seemed to happen between the daily moment with Billy Williams, and his player program moments.
The only important things to note in the scenario in question is a runner on 1st base with 2 outs. Didn't need a home run just an XBH. A gapper that goes to the wall. A textbook stand up double by any standards, but the problem is the runner on first tries to score from first, and is out at the plate. Billy Williams was well on 2nd base before the runner was tagged out to end the inning, and certainly before the throw the home was even made to begin with and yet it's only counted a single........Is that the normal way to score it?????

It’s a judgement call by the umps and scorers. Typically if a player would make it to second without and error it’ll be ruled a double. Sometimes when there’s an attempted put out at another base it can be ruled a single.

Great question.. This is where the discretion of the scorer comes into play. A no doubter hit to the wall is usually scored a double. Now if the scorer determines that they could have gotten you out at second but instead tried to throw the runner out, regardless if the runner is safe or not you would only get a single. I have noticed this issue on several occasions especially on those total base missions.

Usually if it goes through the cutoff man and he would have been safe at second, it should be a double.

I've had it happen with Billy Williams 3 different times, and it just seems so weird. All 3 instances there's no chance of a play at 2nd base with his speed, and it getting through into a gap just rather the play at the plate.
