The stupidity that is moments

SDS

I don't know why this company does this with moments. I have a very hate type relationship with moments in this game and the last one so I decided to check out just how stupid things are.

Using the TN Adam Duvall moment, I played it 18 times where you have to get 8 total bases. I did it decently quickly but that isn't really the point. So in those 18 times I have done the moment, not completed, just the moment itself I saw 29.7% strikes. This is on veteran difficulty. I was walked 12 times mostly because I was trying to take a lot of pitches to see what would happen. I struck out 4 times and had numerous hits. I was also beaned 3 times. All 3 times with 2 strikes on me.

So then I jumped into play VS CPU and played vs Atlanta and Mac Fried. In those games, I only played 3 but the whole 9 inning games and faced 73.1% strikes. I drew 1 walk and wasn't hit by a pitch.

This speaks absolute volumes for me on how absolutely stupid these moments really are.

I know, I have no life but I just thought I'd share this completely useless info.

SDS

Moments have been like this for years. Pitchers throw the ball all over the place like they’re Nolan Ryan. It’s ridiculous.

SDS

Welcome to moments. This one took a while, I had to wait on decent pitches to swing at

When actual data is compiled and analysed like this it is so much more convincing and satisfying to read than the usual (justified nonetheless) complaint posts. Thank you for thinking to and going to the effort of doing this.

Moments really are the ‘busy work’ of this game. I would also add Showdown, Conquest and Events to that category. In fact, anything that detracts from playing actual baseball or team management (ie grinding) could be classed as busy work (the purpose of which is to keep the player engaged in the game without giving the opportunity to learn anything new or improve any skills). That ain’t baseball.

SDS

Remember when moments first came to the game and for the first month or two the actual difficulty was higher than what the moment was supposed to be lol

SDS

I'm on my third straight hour of trying moments for the very first time. I'm trying to do the "get a single home run in a game" on rookie difficulty. I literally have to land a single swing. I'm not a great player but surely I can get the easiest moment they have in the entire selection.

Three hours. I've made hundreds of swings, I've gotten perfects, I can't get it. Screw this. I am uninstalling this game tonight.

SDS

One year, was it 18? Maybe 19? Slider tweaks outside of moments worked in moments. You could change the slider to make the AI throw more strikes. Moments were amazingly fun.

Then SDS patched it so that didn't work anymore and moments have stunk and been misery since.

SDS

I don't get the latest Tops Now Moments. I don't care what they label the settings as, the difficulty is way, way higher than the first two Tops Now weeks. I completed a lot of those on the first tries, the ones with multiple tries took only a few. Now I can't complete a single one of the current week...I always get 1 TB short or one run short.

The freaken Astros comeback one, the Angels closer turns into Greg Maddux once you tie the game. 3 perfect sliders on the inside corner in a row, when he's at 17 pitch count?

SDS

I don't mind the balls, but to have 3-4 pitches in a row thrown 4 feet off the plate is a bit asinine

SDS

Moments are designed for you to fail over and over until finally succeeding.

I suspect somebody in SDS heard how satisfying it feels to beat challenging bosses in games like dark souls and decided to incorporate the same kind of fail, fail, fail, win mechanic in their game.

SDS

After grinding a [censored] ton of conquest I have a working theory about this - it’s because of the hitter’s stats.

I have 7 diamond hitters and Harrison Bader. Bader bats 8th. Lately specifically I’ve faced a lot of Chris Sale; a guy with 80+ control on two pitches.

As we know from simulation there’s a pitch around option. I think the game uses that every time the stats of the batter are good. In other words, strikes are the “mistake” - balls are what the game wants. It wants you to chase it. Furthermore especially with moments it works great for them because you have to grind to get thru it. It’s not looking at the future. It’s looking at this batter, oh he’s really good, pitch around him and get the next guy.

I started the game, and put my controller down and started texting my friend. Thru those first 7 batters, Sale has 2 balls for every strike, 5 walks thru 1.2 innings. The strikeouts were on 3-2 counts with paint. Bader comes up. 3 straight strikes. I leave the pitcher in to hit. 3 straight strikes. Lead off hitter? Back to a 3-0 count, same with next guy, same with next guy.

Played three conquests with this method, same thing happened all three times.

When I subbed in lesser hitters, I started getting more strikes.

In short, because the stats are so good on the card (the batter), they choose to “pitch around.” After they were down by 4 they started attacking more, because in that situation you’d want to be pitching to contact/attacking because you’re already behind by a “bunch”.

Anyway maybe I’m crazy and need to go outside. Based on the decisions you can make in manager mode simulating, I don’t think I am.

Doesn’t work in moments because you’re locked to a guy, but if you want to get thru conquests faster, make a secondary team and fill it with shittier hitters.

SDS

I have disliked moments since day 1 for these reasons. They should be fun, not a hemorrhoid.

SDS

I guess I’m in the minority. I go in. Get them done. Get to try some cards and see if I like them. Now I can parallel them up even if I don’t have the cards yet. And at the end I get to make stubs or get a card to use or sell for more stubs.

SDS

Sorry for the double post. This forum is acting strange today and won’t let me edit or delete a post.

SDS

Call me cheap, I switch to directional hitting for moments -- works like a charm.

You can't parallel up cards in Moments.

At least I have never seen it.

I have 28 plate appearances with Eric Davis and have replayed his moments several times and he has never parallel upgraded in the post moment result screen and none of the moment stats go on his DD vs cpu stat card.

And you can complete missions and get PXP in Conquest. The fact that you can't in Moments makes them even more annoying. I actually liked it better back in TS18 when you had a million individual game requirements and insane stat grinds - I didn't love that, but it was a lot more satisfying than this. (Anyone remember Daniel Nava?)

Oh my gosh. Daniel Nava. Worst. Program. EVER. I completed it, but not without sacrificing a few years off my lifespan 😆

How dare you bring up his name. I had nightmares over that mission. When I finally got it done, I went on a profanity driven tirade because I was so glad it was done.
