1st Inning Conquest
-
Anyone else having trouble with this one? About half way through the CPU got more aggressive than I have ever seen and started taking out my territories and cutting off my routes.
I'm pretty sure I have to start over after owning half the board and territories.
-
Make sure that you have at least 2 fans on tiles around your stronghold and just be careful not to go in a straight line
-
CPU acting the same as previous years. Much easier to do the western half first because of all the open space. They will build up fans much easier than the eastern half because of less fighting among each other. If they have 3 fans in one territory, they will attack a territory of 1, 4 attacks 2 or less, 5 attacks 3 or less, and so on. So make sure you build up fans where they have fans or they will attack and cut off your routes.
-
I've found that if you steal a few fans it lowers the other team's aggression some.
-
Play it like conquest extreme, steal fans and play territories. Then you'll have no problems.
-
I honestly have not noticed a difference. I am playing the same way that I always have and it seems to be working. I just have the last two strongholds to capture which I will do this morning.
-
There is definitely a difference.

I agree. You used to be able to take over the board without evening playing the strongholds until the end. This is impossible now. If we have to play it like extreme conquests, they should say so in the beginning.
-
I don't think there's big difference but only map's shape. You cannot block CPU at narrow space in this map so you need to be more careful.
-
I just finished it. I had no issues.
That said and following up on the previous posters I never leave all the strongholds until the end. Here is how I did the 1st inning map. They gain fans every round.
- Encircle my stronghold by a two hex buffer on all sides, only 1 fan per hex.
- Steal fans during one or two games to meet the steal fans requirement. I do this to the team I am most likely to attack first.
- Grab every uncontested hex that I can easily grab.
- Take over the first stronghold. This gives you some breathing room. If for some reason you lose a stronghold you won't end the run.
- During these phases and for the rest of the run keep an eye on your strongholds. If someone breaks the buffer with more than 2 fans then on the next turn reinforce there and push them back.
- Work your way around the map stealing strongholds as you come across them. I always stack all of my reinforcements on a single square. Are the sims sometimes brutal to me? Yes, but they are also sometimes brutal to the CPU and since I do not split my reinforcements I always have them outnumbered.
Never once did I leave more than a single fan on any hex.
I never had to defend a stronghold
I never had to play above veteran difficulty -
If blowing a three run lead with two outs in the third starting with an unforced throwing error and ending with a cpu bomb on a pitch that missed its spot is familiar, then no, not much different.
-
They seem SUPER aggressive. I can't make progress anymore.
-
I just think the shape of the map is the least ideal option with you stuck in the middle. I went straight after St. Louis and then used that border to help fortify and systematically wiped them out after that. The beginning definitely takes a bit longer just because of the positioning

I thought this was supposed to be a baseball game?

Wrong. This is a strategy game/market simulator with a baseball mini game.

Pretty much. Conquest is horrible and embarrassing.

I like conquest and have never 'failed' a map. One tip is to ALWAYS steal fans during the first 3 rounds (more in the USA map). This means you get anywhere between 6 and 12 fans, depending on the difficulty you play at. At the start of the game, take up all the empty space. By turn 5, you should have conquered 2 or 3 strongholds and receive enough fans per turn to just walk in a straight line and conquer the map tile by tile
-
I'm not sure what conquest a lot of you are playing. It's the exact same thing as previous years. I didn't play a single game (didn't steal fans) until I had the entire map to myself with only stronghold games to play.
