Need Advice: Experiencing Tendonitis in Fingers
-
Starting in January, I have been having issues with my index fingers, which are used to press the right and left buttons/triggers on the controller. The first occurrence was in January, where I experienced inflammation and slight swelling in my left index finger, after I had been playing a mix of MLB TS 20 and Battlefield 1.
After self-diagnosis it as tendonitis, I splinted the finger to limit movement and iced it every so often. Doing this made it go back to normal, but starting yesterday I'm experiencing the same thing in my right index finger and I'm taking the same measures as I did last time.
While I have been a gamer since around 2006 and have played video games regularly since then, I have never before experienced tendonitis in my fingers. I assume that this is the result of increased video gaming caused by the pandemic, since I have nowhere else to go, nothing else to do, and they provide a welcome distraction from the world's many troubles.
I am worried that if I keep developing tendonitis in my fingers, it could result in permanent damage. But beyond managing tendonitis whenever it develops, I am not sure what to do that doesn't involve going to a doctor (which is the last thing I want to do, given current events).
Is anyone else experiencing this issue?

For tendonitis, the main remedies are really rest and NSAIDs. Icing may also help. If you haven't turned off vibration with your controllers, I would recommend doing that.
Best of luck.

Whenever I have a hand/finger injury I will not play games until it is gone. And I've had to do that a few times in the past. My hands are important for my work so I don't want video games to add to an injury. But yes, ice and advil and a few days off should help.
But if your the doctors wife, can't you ask your husband?

Ahahaha, I'm not even married, it's just my PSN name lol. Ice and rest is what I did last time, but it's just strange to me that this is happening now after I've played video games on a regular basis for so long.

You can try experimenting with a different grip in the controller. My hands are larger so I actually use my middle fingers to operate the L1/2 & R1/2 buttons and triggers.

I actually tried doing that yesterday—it's trickier for me since I've always used my index fingers for the left and right buttons and triggers (I have petite hands lol). Had some surprising results vs the CPU Rangers...
34 runs on 50 hits. Hahahaha!
