How come nobody throws it nowadays? Quite a few legends did.

Because pitching has become more about power (fastballs, cutters) and strikeouts. Those that don't have a 95+ fastball try the knuckleball first because it's easier to throw. Or they focus on speed differentials with offspeed pitches like changeups.

Screwballs may make a comeback soon as batters have adjusted to power by now. They are not strikeout pitches, more like groundball pitches.

Basically baseball is becoming more like MLB the Show, 100mph+ fastballs and home run after home run. Maybe this is an accurate simulation after all. I’m just gonna stand outside and yell at the sky while I replay the 2004 WS and wear rose tinted spectacles.

When I read the title of the post, I thought it would be about the screwballs in this game. Somebody needs to tell SDS what a screwball is. All of the screwballs I've seen in this game are exactly the same as curveballs with no arm-side run. Screwball should have significant break in the opposite direction of a typical curve.

But to answer your question, screwballs are very hard on the elbow. Brent Honeywell of the Rays system for example, was know for his screwball. He had to have Tommy John surgery.

Look at pictures of Carl Hubbell’s arm. That’s why nobody throws the screwball anymore.

I threw a screwball in HS and in my early 20s. I never found it to be too hard on my arm.
