the guy said he hit 2 similar pitches with 2 completely different results. You said it's because its a video game. I think I should be able to win online homerun derby's with commons, but it doesn't happen. It should though, right?
Sure.

You’re making less sense as time goes on.
Let me take a stab at this: I think what our friend is trying to say is that if you use the “it’s a video game” argument then any and everything should be allowed in the universe the video game created like Nathan Drake being able to hang for hours upon end by his fingertips on some bougainvillea and not getting tired, or Kratos being able to spend all that time with his son and not kill himself, or, and more directly related to this video game, take a common batter and win in a homerun derby. Then, and this is where I start to speculate for him: since you can’t necessarily take a common player into a homerun derby and win, that means this game has rules. And when the outcome doesn’t accurately reflect the input, as the OP had initially mentioned, then this video game is breaking its own rules, and therefore, the “it’s a video game” argument is moot. Now, I’m not saying I agree or disagree. That was just my interpretation.

How does a well hit ball with 109 mph exit velocity become a routine fly ball? Anyone have an explanation for this? Launch angle was good. So the ball just hit a huge amount of resistance? The air was really humid that day? Windy?
And what exactly was your launch angle, stadium you were playing at, time of day and year. All these factors play into the final result.

no, it makes sense. you just think its stupid for a common player to win a HR derby. But hey, keep the doggie face comments coming.

Yes I do think it’s stupid for a common player to win a HR derby. What am I missing here?

Even in real life a 109 exit velo has a .712 expected batting average. So it's not a guaranteed hit.
-
@SchnauzerFace said in 109 mph exit velocity:
I wonder how accurate those exit velo read outs are. Sometimes I absolutely smoke the ball and it says it’s like 99 or 100, and then other times it seems like a routine can of corn but it says it was 110 or something. I think the wind might play a part but who knows anymore.
I believe in most online modes there is no wind

Correct. But the 109 mile an hour outs are generally line drives right to somebody. I think the OP’s beef is that a 109 mile an hour fly ball (He mentioned a good launch angle) should not land in the field of play unless there’s a hurricane or the ball hits a bird. I found this site that if you input the launch angle and exit velocity, it shows results from similarly batted balls.

I’m pretty sure they brought wind back to RS this year. I think I remember that happened earlier in the year. Am I cray?

It goes back to the original post and someone's answer is "its a video game". So why cant a common win a HR derby since it's a video game?

They have more love to give though

The reason you probably see the “video game” show you ridiculous exit velos, is because the game has ridiculous attributes where guys have 125% the power Judge and Stanton do, 125% of Vottos contact ability, pitchers have 125% the ability of Max Scherzer who doesn’t give up runs. Why would it make sense? How could those attributes possibly translate to realism? Was it off a 103 mph sinker to boot?
It’s a video game, the ball isn’t travelling 109 mph it’s pixels changing colour on a screen.
-
I think the “it’s s video game” reply kind of doesn’t hold up. I mean the developer did an entire patch just to make hitting feedback support the outcomes and explain them in a “realistic” way.
I’d be fine if the game took itself less seriously, it’s just striking when the results seem so arbitrary and random.

I from baseball savant i pulled the results of all FLYBALLS hit 109 MPH or greater in 2019. Here are the results:
601 batted balls, 595 hits = .990 batting average.
Of the 6 outs they were hit by and traveled a distance of:
Acuna 400'
Hunter Dozier 399'
Realmuto 396'
Soler 385'
Gallo 347'
Kris Bryant 334'It's so rare and so unlikely.

Great evidence! That’s pretty much how it seemed in the moment: rare and unlikely.
