Stan Musial

Interesting fact about Stan Musial. In 1957 he became the first MLB player in history to have an annual salary of $100,000. In 1959 after a subpar season he went to the cardinals and asked them to cut his salary to $80,000. Imagine that happening today. Noway.

Side note, I met him once. At an autograph signing during a hall of fame weekend in Cooperstown. I was just a kid at th etime but he was a genuinely nice guy, his manager/handler literally had to push and pull him away from the signing as he wanted to stay and talk, and play the harmonica.

He had over 3600 hits in his career. Quite the stud. Even finished with 475 HR’s. Pretty dang good career if you ask me.

And he missed a few years while in the Navy during the war.

Yep. Total class act.

Mantle once said of Stan, 'Stan is a better play than I am, because he's a better man than I am.'
Neat.

Hank Greenberg was MLBs first $100,000 man
