Why are some of the best players of all time not in this game?

Im just saying, if SDS goes to a former player or former players family with an offer and its denied because they want more money itd be just stupid greedy, whatever the offer, I doubt its unreasonably small. They shouldnt have to pay to put a former player in the game, as far as keeping players out the game to put in future years games to give people a reason to buy next years game goes, if they cant improve gameplay, add new features, and improve graphics enough to the point they gotta rely on that then they have a BIG problem
So let’s pretend you are the child of Mantle and you know he did not want his legacybparaded around for money. Why would you say yes. Especially if you are making your own money.
What if you were the legend like Bonds and a multi millionaire and you know that if you are in game people are just going to bring up the steroids stuff and you would rather stay out of the public eye. The amount of money just isn’t worth it.
There are sooo many reasons these guys would say no. Remember any guy post 1980 is probably a multi millionaire so money alone isn’t enough. They probably get lots of offers

If you're a current player or are in the HOF they have the rights to use you in the game. If not, they need to negotiate.

I don't think they have rights to hall of famers. Otherwise, guys like Randy Johnson and Hank Aaron would be in the game.

Interesting. I know that this past year, EA got the rights to the NHL Alumni Association and uses these players as their Legends. They don't have just hall of famers in their game either and a fully licensed game you would think has the right to the HOF. There isn't an Alumni version for players in MLB past but it would be interesting if they could get the rights to the HOF. I don't think that you still could use players from there though even with the rights to it. Would probably still have to get the individual rights.

So I've seen a few post about how players want more money after they have made a ton. Players back in the day didn't get anywhere close to the amount players get now, it was almost unheard of for a play to get more than 80-90 mil in the early 2000s like when Kershaw first signed his like 90mil contract before 2010 he had one of the highest contracts A-Rod had an unheard of deal as well, now its unheard of for big time players to get less than 80mil for long term deals. On the flip side some guys might not want to do it because they dont care about money or they simply don't want their likeness or name to be used, and some players just might have a bad rap that SDs doesn't want to be affiliated with. Also I have a feeling when MLB the show goes to multi console we will get a ton more legendary players because their revenue will jump dramatically and they will have more money to put towards getting the huge names that want a lot of money.

Relax. SDS opened up the old checkbook this year to give us a plethora of names I never thought they would dish out for. Ty Cobb's family doesn't need our money...he was one of the original investors in Coca-Cola. Personally, I'd love a Satchel Paige Rookie Card (He was 42!) but I'm not holding my breath.

Randy Johnson? Pedro Martinez? Are they not in this game or am I missing something??
They don't have their rights and money.

In the words of Patrick Ewing. "We make a lot of money but we spend a lot too."
They need every penny they can get to feed their families lol. -
Why is this only a thing for MLB. I get the feeling that madden and nba2k don’t have such restrictions

@eatyum said in Why are some of the best players of all time not in this game?:
The simple answer is $.
SDS has to negotiate with each retired player or corporation/family that owns the naming rights separately. Not sure if they have to negotiate with each retired player, but the answer to these type of questions is always $.

Many old time players actually didn't make much because they were basically owned by the ball clubs. free agency really didnt hit till curt flood.

You think Favre isn't in Madden 20 because nobody has any interest?

I'm almost positive they do not negotiate individually. They have agreements with the MLBPA, the Hall of Fame and the alumni association. If a player is part of any of those three SDS can get their rights if the player agrees to be a part of the licensing deals. Now I'm not sure if Mantle would be more expensive to be on the list than an Aubrey Huff type.
They did do a single deal with Ohtani last year because the hype surrounding him was huge.

I do not believe that gets the rights to non-active players, mainly because there's a lot of slam dunk tier players who haven't been in despite being in at least two of those

I'll admit I'm not exactly sure how it works but I don't see them having 130+ individual licensing deals.
Maybe the bigger names call for a bigger price and that's why you don't see them in the game
