The George Brett Conundrum
-
B ased on yesterday’s reveals, TA3 is for the 2nd tier of franchise greats. They’re (mostly) the type of guys who are obvious candidates for their team’s HoF but are not necessarily the all-time greats in the history of MLB.
That leads me to believe the Uber-legends (Ted, Cal, Babe, Frank, Griffey, Rickey, etc) will get SS cards in TA4. But! I can’t ignore the George Brett outlier. He’s easily the best player in Royals history without any argument. So... what could we possibly get in TA4 that will top Brett? I kinda doubt TA4 will be Finest cards. I think those packs sold really well last year, so I don’t see them giving those cards away for free. Maybe TA4 would be flashbacks? Greinke and Salvador Perez already have their high diamonds, so I guess it would be a flashback Gordon. But wouldn’t that be a disappointing step back from TA3?
And where are the rest of the legends going to be? Sig Series packs? Headliners? Even if we get a 10th inning, there are only 15 more boss slots. I am sure we could all name 30 or more guys who will probably end up with 99s.
I have no impactful conclusion to this post, so just think about your two favorite animals and imagine them going at it. I’m picturing a hippo and a pug and oohhhh man.

Bo knows...

I would say Bo would never get a better card than Brett. But... based on the FS cards, SDS is awarding overalls based solely on potential and not reality. So, in that case, Bo could get a monster hypothetical card.

I agree with you 100%. I only say Bo because he could be a “new legend” that they have been saving for TA 4

TA4 will be Finest. They will have more than 30 finest, just like last year.
SS, Award and Prime cards will fill out the legends. They will be bosses, headliners, programs and Duck packs.
Plenty of room for everyone and SDS will maximize their profits accordingly.

That Brett card was godly last year.

Agreed 1000%! The Brett/Donaldson platoon was unstoppable. I’ve been a diehard White Sox fan since I was a zygote, but I’m using up my AL Central silvers to get Brett on Tuesday and I’ll just get Paulie later.

Bret saberhagen SS or awards.

Sabes already got his 97 OVR awards card. Not likely that his SS card would be rated any higher.

A 99 Mondesi...lol

I'm still thinking it will be Alex Gordon.
Another option, one that i would like to see, is 98 OVR Greinke. He would have insane HR/9 and a pitch mix of FB (95 mph), SL (85 mph), CH (84 mph) and extremely slow curve (73 mph).

If it’s Gordon, do you think it’ll be flashbacks all around? Or just SS in general?

I just remembered that the card art shown in the first reveal was like the face of the franchise cards, so it's not SS or awards. Also, on mlb the show's twitter is shows cards that are not 98 OVR. So i think it will be FOTF Gordon (96 OVR), very similar to his SS card from last year

I'm guessing maybe postseason flashbacks because even Gordon's SS card last year was only a 93 OVR. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Looking on mlb the show's twitter... it's Brett

Yes, but this thread is about what that means for TA4. Since Brett is the best player in franchise history, it’s hard to see how they’re going to top that in stage 4. My point was that every other AL reveal could be topped by a franchise legend, like Foxx, Cal, Babe, Frank, Griffey, Rickey, etc etc., but the inclusion of Brett throws that theory out the window

I’m not sure every team could find a player to fit that requirement. Ex: the White Sox haven’t been to the playoffs in so long that I don’t think there are any active players who could get PS flashbacks. Maybe if it’s expanded to include legends, so Buerhle could get a PS card from 2005.

Good point... It is, as you mentioned, quite the conundrum.
