The thread title is a topic that often comes up. People are quick to use it, and honestly SDS own usage of the phrase isn't necessarily what an individual might want to interpret it as.

It comes up as two areas of content:

    1. Programs with only one path to completion
    2. Mode specific rewards

Also, there are many types of players
-People who strongly prefer online OR offline
-People that dislike a specific mode
-People that like to play everything
-People that want to push themselves
-People that play the game to relax
-People that use most of their entertainment time on The Show
-People that only play a couple hours a week

And many more, but some will say "you can't please everyone" as a mantra to hide behind in much the same way people use "play your way"

Yes, there is truth you can't please everyone. No matter what SDS does someone inevitably will complain. But that doesn't mean they should keep doing things that alienate large portions of their player base.

The program issue has had increased frustration as for most of the year programs were very lenient. Moments were almost always skippable. Now it seems that programs often are a specific list of things to do, usually a lot of moments. There has definitely been regression here in my view. When moments were optional, people still did them so I don't feel the need to start forcing them on people again. The spooky program, as of the time of me writing this, is incomplete. I think its weird to require a full conquest map in a program, but we haven't seen the full program yet. So holding off judgment.

Then there is the mode specific card issue

As many know, I am a very strong opponent of mode specific rewards. I think its a big problem in the game this year. I also think its good to give people an incentive to play multiple modes and I will say that its fair that someone who only plays one or two modes should not have every card in the game, at least not in October. February, perhaps, but not October

I can list dozens of way for SDS to encourage people to play specific modes, without it being a strict requirement.

The old TA structure (23 in particular) was a well done way to let people play different content types and still make progress. And allowing people to select what they wanted first helps the low play time people. Obviously this can't be used for everything, but I think its a good starting point. 2K has its own way of having no mode specific cards (except oddly Domination). Or do something completely new.

I do think they should address this, at least to some degree. Yes, some people will say they didn't do enough. Some purists will somehow be upset because other people have the cards they do by playing differently. But I feel safe to say there will be a lot less people unhappy in total and the game will be better off for it.

Play Your Way, at least in my opinion, was always about the XP Path since no matter what you do or how you play you get XP

But they could have spelled that out better and, as usual, many people heard what they wanted to hear.

There have been mode specific cards for many years. The difference this year is that they made so many offline rewards no sell. So while I am not forced to play online to get a card since it is still available to buy, the reverse is no longer true.

That creates two issues. First it forces online players to play offline modes and secondly it limits the stub potential for offline players since many times we can't sell our unwanted cards

Since this is coming up again I will ask the same questionI always ask...the only evidence I have ever been able to find of SDS saying "play your way" was in regards to the release of the new multiplayer program. If it was ever used in any other context I would love to see it. People always just say "it was in the streams" but then when I ask which one they disappear and nobody has ever been able to point to it actually being said. So if anyone knows when they said it in another context, please let us know.

As for the rest of the topic...Personally I have no issue with mode specific cards, its always been part of the game, and if there is a mode I don't feel like playing then I just will live without having that specific card.

With that said, I also would have no issue at all if they did away with mode specific cards either. I'm not sure what the best way to implement that really is, but I'd be fine with it if they can come up with something that works. In the end I think the easiest solution is to just make everything sellable, so if someone doesn't want to play a mode they can at least still get the card another way.

The bottom line is the idea of "play your way" that most people use it in is simply impossible, because I think everyone agrees there should be some sort of limits/restrictions/requirements to what needs to be done to earn cards.

To add on to this, they have also dramatically increased pack cards over the last two years. We now have weekly spotlight packs (actually impossible to get all of these via gameplay, even if you had perfect luck), weekly chase cards, and the special pack drops (Vintage, Moonshot, etc) are not choice packs so you may need to open 100s to get the card you want. All of this is greatly expanding the supply of cards you need to use stubs on.

Honestly, I’m with SDS on this. I don’t think “play your way” means every reward needs to be available through every mode. Different modes having their own rewards makes sense and gives people a reason to try them.

Personally, I like programs that get me playing modes I wouldn’t normally play. It breaks up the routine and gives me something different to work toward. Otherwise, I’d probably just stick to the same things and miss out on parts of the game.

I still get to decide what’s worth my time and which rewards I want to pursue. We can debate individual requirements, but I don’t think SDS encouraging people to experience more of the game is inherently a problem.

    Encourage: yes

For example, if the multiplayer path didnt have cards, people would still play it because of the 50 bundle and pack rewards along the way

Conquest is another one people play because there is good incentive

It was said a lot more in past years than this year, which is a no brainer since they stopped live streaming or saying much this year

These days, like you said don't really mention it much at all.

It still pertains to the XP Inning path but not much else

I've still never been able to find evidence of them saying it outside of the multiplayers program, in which case it is true that you can play your way to complete that. It makes sense for the inning path as well, so I could see that. If just seems like the community has flipped it and incorrectly attributed it to meaning "play your way" and still earn all the cards in the game.

I suggested people are twisting the intent of the phrase as well. It's still a good concept, within reason. Some might consider just flipping cards all day as playing their way, why should they have to swing a bat at all? But focusing on more absurd things like that shouldn't distract SDS from the fact that a lot of people would prefer more flexibility in earning rewards

I dont get the vitriol for moments. I dont play h2h, and rarely play above veteran using directional hitting and pulse pitching. Yet I have very little problems with moments. Yes there are some that frustrate the ish out of me, but not many.
