Home Run Distances

Can anyone explain how the home run distance is calculated?
I was playing at Yankee Stadium and hit a Mickey Mantle-ish shot to the upper bowl in right field and it was 440ft.
Two days later I hit one to the lower bowl just a couple degrees to the left and it was 435ft.
Is the home run distance the actual distance traveled or the distance if there were no stands there?

It's a projection of how far it would go till it hits the ground, I think it ignores some objects like seats and stuff but accounts for others.
It is not a measured distance, but a calculation.
