You can get the lightning player(s) just by doing the small programs each week.
The season collections however will require cards that are only available in packs. Those packs cannot be earned at present but may end up in programs or conquest maps at some point. I'd be certain they would in any other year but '24 is all about monetization thus far.
I feel this was true for some of the early seasons last year? Its still not certain thats the case this year, we don't know if the light content slate will continue or not (but it probably will)
Either way, at the current pace it should be pretty easy to get the three choice packs as NMS provided you play enough to complete the main track. Theres a decent chunk of stubs at the end that can help you grab cheap cards in the shop if you still need.
Look at the Season Awards Collection.
First it says:
"Collect Season Awards program players each week to earn Lightning Season Awards players coming after Drop 4 and Drop 8."
I highlighted Program Players because it is relevant. Also when you look at the collection the only two cards available to collect are Garrett Crochet (week 1) and Micael Comforto (Week 2), which were the final awards of each program. None of the pack cards are even an option in that collection right now.
SDS also stated, in their Tweet about earning the Lightning Players, that you had to collect the SA players and that the ones in the pack wouldn't be in that collection.
So as long as you complete each drop; you'll get the Lightning player without having to buy any cards.
-
I assumed they were talking not just about SA, but the S1 collection as well.
But yeah, SA is just finish each program and collect all, which is a good approach (one of the few content drop things done right this year)

First we complain about cards’ values being lower than ever. Then we complain about having to use stubs to buy cards, which is exactly what would raise their value.
Why even have an in-game-currency, if people are going to complain about having to spend it!

I truly believe this wasn't the initial plan. I think they changed the plan and made sure they announced it after the backlash. The community was pretty pissed and rightfully so. I feel like the player drop off is going to be pretty severe this year. The true baseball fans will hang around and still play because we enjoy the sport but they are going to lose a lot of the casual fans because there is nothing to do in the game.

@The-Harvest Look, it will be like last year … They will eventually put out „the old“ packs in paths/conquests and from there on you can fill out the rest … When you completed LS, all your stubs are there to either improve the team or buy some cards cheap to fill out the season-set … I am NMS too and I am highly confident that I will get all 3 rewards pretty easily … I am not sure, if I get all the 400 when the season ends (but who cares)
-
@The-Harvest I’m worried we won’t actually know if we can complete the season sets with NMS until it’s too late and the market will spike on cards needed . Since they are slowly releasing content over time there is no way to know .
-
Ha! I bought one to do the DH mission to sell it afterwards but accidentally locked it in a collection; smh.
-
I wait a day or two for prices to settle out, buy them to complete the program faster then sell them back. I do this even while having plenty of stubs that I can afford to keep them.

You can’t collect a card then sell it

I dont think people would care much about the packs if they weren't so overpriced. You gotta be a complete moron to spend 30-40K on a pack where you have an 90% chance of pulling a diamond tier that will get you 4000 on the market.
-
@Easy_Duhz_It_ people must be buying them, because they keep pumping them out.
-
@go4stros25
Gambling addicts and rich people. I don’t care how people spend their money but it doesn’t make any logical sense to buy the high end packs with just a remote chance at subpar cards. If no one bought them SDS would be forced to put better cards in packs, lower the asking price, or both.

Like @YOSHI24 and @SaveFarris have said... patience is key. As of today, there are 60 days left in Season 1. Two more TA programs will net 60 free cards at least (90 in total). 10 more Season Award programs, for 50 more cards. Two more BR programs for at least 25 more cards (these technically aren't "free", though, given the 1,500 entry fee, but you can earn more packs and stubs to offset the price). During the first two weeks, we also got Egg Hunt and Spring Breakout for another 12 cards. Another 6-ish cards for doing RS two more times.
So , that's 180-ish free cards. if I'm counting right. I'm at 108 collected right now, including my TA part 1. I did buy a couple of cards that I wanted (Jake Burger, anyone? Love that card). So by the end of Season 1, that puts me around 250 cards if I don't buy anything else. We need 325 to get all 3 Collection packs. Will I get there without buying any packs/cards? Looking doubtful, but we'll see what SDS rolls out. Like others have said, I'm sure that some of these packs will be sprinkled in upcoming CQ maps, and at a minimum, that should tank prices.
Someone let me know if my math is wrong...

@Easy_Duhz_It_
Agreed, 100%. But as go4stros said, people must be buying them!
-
I usually don't complete sets until July/August when I have 2/3 million stubs to spend.
So like in previous years (except 23) - are you saying I can't just buy players off the market to complete all the team sets? it's different this year?
I'm talking about the sets where it's every team and once you complete you get a AL WEST, NL WEST, NL, AL, MLB awards.
-
@arvcpa yes they will release plenty more cards, but will the average player still be playing? Will they have time to play either the best cards before they tike out with the new season?
-
If you want these cards right now then yes you need to buy packs. Im sure once then next season starts or maybe even TA2 at the end of the week, some of these packs with show up in rewards. The two keys to NMS has always been grinding and patience. Season Awards were easy to complete without doing the set. I have not spent a dime and really have not grinded very much at all and I already have all but 5 teams completed for Live series. Im in no hurry for the super expensive cards I need.
-
@LuvMyXBOX
You definitely can buy them off the market. You just don't get any of the packs (so far) by doing activities.
You don't get rewards for each division this year, however.
-
@The-Harvest SDS is not forcing you to buy to finish season awards programs as i finished both of them without paying packs but this is what equalivant to tier skips in 2k and madden where some people wants to get a headstart, the same people who wants the collections rewards day one. But if SDS is leaning to please those people, then I agree with you.
