Is the Show starting to become more Pay for Players?

As critical as I am of SDS, one thing I can’t say is the game is a cash grab. They make very good cards readily available with minimal effort.

Yes. And anyone who's says no either devotes 5+ hours/day or spends money.
No other reason to start the year releasing 99s and 2 different collections. They are trying to make their Jeter money back.
what a ridiculous take - i have an incredible team - i hardly play as i have a life outside of gaming - i never spent money on stubs either - i love your armchair analysis, as if you are some financial guru understanding the subtleties of licensing fees and how to monetize a business

I also have an amazing team and haven’t spent a penny outside the purchase price. He’s an Astros fan so he probably doesn’t know much about anything.

Moreso than in the past for sure. If you doubt this check the # of 99s (and their quality) that are hidden behind expensive packs every Tuesday and Friday.
This is the correct answer in my opinion.
I can already see that even my modest goal of just obtaining all of the Cardinal players is going to be much more expensive.
99 Jordan Walker - Purchase off market
99 Jim Edmonds - Purchase off Market
99 Adam Wainwright - Purchase off market
99 Ozzie Smith - Purchase off MarketPrices have come down some since they were released. Even though their prices have been slowing going down they are still around 220K to get all four. I believe they are all from packs so there is no way to get them without spending on the packs themselves to try and get lucky or purchasing the cards outright.
Getting stubs simply from playing and doing offline content is really slow. You have to rely on getting some pack luck from earned packs to try and pull some diamonds.
You don’t need them to complete any aspect of the game. You are making the personal choice to purchase or not purchase them. That’s on you not the makers of the game.
I never said that I needed them. But I enjoy playing offline content with an all Cardinals squad so I wanted them.
I realize I could simply choose "Generate Best Squad" and do everything that I normally do but I don't enjoy that as much.
So, yes it's true you don't need to spend a cent but I still feel like SDS is being more aggressive with their card and pack releases in order to keep more players Stub poor in hopes that they will buy stubs off the store. Because, while you and I may have the self restraint to not fall for that, there are plenty of others who will.

Lots of reasonable responses on here which is a pleasant surprise. For the last 3 years, I’ve been blocking people with stupid opinions and perhaps it’s finally paying off!
Like many others have said, this game is WAY better than other sports games for “DD” type of stuff. Other than buying the fancy version every year, which gives you a nice head start, I never consider spending real money (it’s cool if you want to obviously). There are so many ways to earn packs and if you play the market smartly, even without flipping (which I only rarely do because it’s so boring). My team is pretty stacked and while I likely won’t be getting Chipper, I can compete with anyone from a roster perspective.Agreed. I tried to start this not as a bitter commentary, but as a conversation. I didn't know which way it would go. I'm happy to see the conversation

I got what you mean now. Same here with the Dodgers for me. We both happen to like teams who have some great legends thrown at us that are irresistible and impossible to get unless you play 24/7 or purchase stubs. Other sports games force you to pay or lose when playing online where this one isn’t.

no harm no malice at all mate - i like your posts too - just have to disagree with the pay to play system - i know you didn't create the thread either - have a great night over there

I just love how people who don't even play other team modes make comments about how DD is the "best".
It's not.
it is if you are stuck in this immature mindset that it's all about 99 rated cards and trying to compete to be some kind of paid professional MLB 23 player.
There's no mode in DD with any actual strategy. Everyone says they LOVE Battle Royale, and then claims there's no need for a capped mode...when it is literally the same thing just using cards you OWN and not playing cheesy 3 inning games where players with HUGE flaws and cheesy tactics aren't exposed.
Not having matchmaking is stupid. Especially with all this 99 craziness.
At least in 2K, if I decide to load up a team with a couple Pink Diamonds I like...and a few Rubies and Amethysts...I'm going to get matched up with someone else whose team has an OVR rating similar to mine, not some team with the 13 best players in the game.
There's no way to do this in The Show...unless you're one of the best 500 players in the world and can go online with Golds and low Diamonds and beat bums like me.
I think it's kind of sad...and boring...and silly...and unintelligent...and lame....what these modes have turned into. All the grinding and silly tasks you are basically FORCED to do to get certain cards. The complete lack of any kind of roster building strategy because on DAY 1 you can easily build a team full of flawless players.
The way certain cards become "meta", so playing online literally becomes like playing the SAME exact CPU team 100 times in a row.
Gee...it sure is fun to play against a juiced Lindor and Murikami every freaking game for 2 months!! So much variety....
BTW...why TF is Murakami so fast? That dude slaps screamers to the SS with 105 EV's and almost beats them out!
It's unbelievable how they've taken what should be an amazingly deep and immersive mode and made it so shallow, lame, and completely devoid of any strategy whatsoever.
