Waiting for the Cardinals to do something

About to sign Wilson Contreras to a multi year deal

I would have rather traded for Murphy and used free agent money on someone else but Contreras will help. My guess is A's asking price included players the Cardinals didn't want to part with (Jordan Walker, Masyn Winn)

Just afraid that they will use the contract as an excuse why they can't make other big moves this offseason.

I know many fans were hoping to resign Qunitana but that ship has sailed.

I read that the A's were asking for Gorman, Winn and another prospect. If I'm the Cardinals that's a definite pass

Yeah, I think Winn is untouchable for now. Gorman is one of the few lefty bats they have.

    It's a done deal.

Catcher Willson Contreras and the St. Louis Cardinals are in agreement on a five-year, $87.5 million contract, a source familiar with the deal tells ESPN.

Definitely getting more offense than defense with this move.

Yea, not sure how I feel about this. I'm wondering how it's going to affect the pitching staff.

I don't even know if he's going to be their primary catcher, the Jays still have a surplus that the Cardinals may still look at (Jansen for instance)

He will be. They are still high on Ivan Herrera who needs some more time in the minors. Knizner will spell Contreras fairly often I believe, with Contreras sliding into the right hand DH role against lefties.

They have talked about needing more swing and miss type pitchers and they have a lack of left handed bats that can break up the middle of the lineup (Goldschmidt, Arenado, Contreras and maybe O'Neill)

A bit off a shocker this evening, Xander Bogaerts has signed with San Diego. It's a 11 year deal for 280 million

So Xander got a little over 25 mil, Trea a little over 27 mil, and Correa opted out because he wants 35 mil +. Dont think that is gonna happen. Unless it is like a 3 year deal or something maybe. I see 10 for 300 mil the max. Probably from the Dodgers.. NM, Dodgers are apparently not pursuing Correa.

Just an idea of what the A's want for Murphy. From the Cardinals their ask was

    Lars Nootbaar
Brendan Donovan (Gold Glover, #3 in Rookie of the year voting in NL)
Gordon Graceffo (Starting Pitcher & the Cards #3 prospect)

The Cardinals only have 4 left handed bats on their roster (Nootbaar, Donovan, Gorman and Burleson) with Nootbaar and Donovan probably being the best of those. Barring any other major signings I think Nootbaar (RF) and Donovan (2B) are also both in the starting lineup come next season.

So two position starters with tons of control left and the Cardinals current Top Pitching prospect.

Oh and I have read that in the discussions with Toronto the Blue Jays wanted Ryan Helsley

Didn’t see the Trevor Williams deal. Sad to see him go but good for him. He will probably get a chance to be a starter with the Nationals

Jeez. Their payroll right now is 85 million more than the Yankees and just short of double the Dodgers. And they have a payroll of 224million guaranteed for 2024 already! Next closest is the Phils at 169.

They are loading up for a 2 year window and setting themselves up to restock in 2 years when a lot of the players will be free agents. They need to lock up Pete Alonso long term sooner than later tho.

Definitely possible. Playoffs are a whole other beast. Have a bad few days and go home. Or of course untimely injuries.

Braves got Sean Murphy from the A's along with Freddy Tarnack , looks like it's 3 team deal with the Brewers also involved, William Contreras goes to the Brewers, Manny Pena and Esteury Ruiz go from the Brewers to the A's, the Brewers receive Joel Payamps and Justin Yeager from the A's, and kyle Muller goes from the Braves to the A's.

Surprising move I thought. Sean Murphy is great but William Contreras was great last year. To give him up and those prospects for Sean Murphy seemed like a bit much. They do have him under control for a few years tho.
