I just was told that the players rejected the offer with no counter offer. Don’t know what all has happened but it stinks

Owners reportedly labeled it their “best and final offer.” That language does not invite a counter offer.

Greedy jerks. This is so damaging to baseball.

Yep there’s absolutely no limit to the insane contracts that can be given out in baseball. All of the contracts are guaranteed. There’s no salary cap. The qualifying offer is over $18 million. Last year teams spent something like 1.5 billion in new contracts.

I fail to see how it’s the greed of the owners. Baseball players have it made compared to NFL and NBA.

Here’s a little dose of reality, in 2019 the Kansas City Royals had profits that exceeded 251 million dollars. Do you have any clue what their payroll was. I’ll answer that, a little over 109 million. The owners of the royals pocketed 140 million in profits. With those profits the owners could’ve afforded two or three high priced free agents so what did they actually do. They decided to tank and slash payroll. Last year their payroll was under 90 million while revenue profits were well over 200 million. So tell me, who is greedy again? BTW, these profit totals only grow from here with the mid and large market teams.

They had revenue of 251 million. Revenue is not the same as profit. You have no idea what their profit was or if they even had any.

I guess you didn’t see where I made that correction in an earlier post.

    Except you didn’t.

I guess you’re blind because my correction was made on the previous page when someone else made the exact same point you made. Please don’t make me embarrass you further!!!!

Not really. The guy said he was correcting you but then said the same thing as you. You then agreed.

The point is that you are conflating revenue and profit. They aren’t the same.

And if you’re going to criticize my clearly rectified mistake then please use the correct terminology. I certainly didn’t “conflate” revenue and profits. If I had conflated the two I would have combined them. Instead I compared the two which is completely different than conflating the two.

Here is the fact, The two sides can not come to an agreement. Games have been canceled. If no agreement is made there will be no season this year.

My opinion is the Owners need to give more and the players need to comprise with the owners, The owners are not going to give exactly what the players want. The players do not seem to be compromising with the owners. The owners have tried with multiple counter offers. Owners do not want to bend on the 18m the the players do not want to come down from what they are asking for. the two sides need to comprise this and meet somewhere in the middle for a season to happen.

90 minute meeting. No proposals. Talked about banning the shift. So another wasted day.

I'm open to a restriction and I absolutely love the bigger base.

A positional restriction is a gimmick. It is like when the NBA tried to eliminate zone defense.

While I agree to an extent, "hitting the other way" isn't near as easy to do now as it was 20 years ago. Pitchers are throwing 92 mph sliders in on the hands now. Its almost impossible to take that the other way. What needs to happen with the shift is simple. Must have 4 infielders on the dirt. I don't care what side of 2nd they are on but you shouldn't be able to play someone in shallow RF. Just my 2 cents

OK, I can agree with that. If the put restrictions on the shift for the infield next will be putting restrictions on outfielders shifting to the gaps or to the lines. You give a little then they want more.

Valid argument. For me personally I wouldnt be upset with that but I also don't think they should put restrictions like that myself. It's true that it's harder to hit the other way but so many guys come up nowadays with that ability and then get pull happy once they hit a few home runs and lose that ability. As a Met fan Conforto is a perfect example. He was great as using all fields when he came up, then he got pull happy and became super inconsistent. They need to start teaching more discipline and stop guys from getting pull happy.

I mean I definitely can agree with that, it's just that guys like Gallo get blasted for being a three true outcomes player when they don't really have a choice either way. Gallo gets abused on social media daily when Adam Dunn was the same player 15 years ago with not even a fraction of the defensive value Gallo provides. I'm definitely not anti-shift(Ted Williams got a shift when he played), but the shift has gone a tad too far IMO. 15 years ago there were maybe 20 players in the whole league that got a shift. Its every at-bat now

How is banning the shift a "cowardly way out"? I am all for [restricting] the shift, it rewards athleticism for the position and makes the game more entertaining (ie. The Wiz). Noboby wants to see the ball hit to a wall of 5-6 defenders multiple times a game... boring.

When the shift starts causing offense numbers to drop down to 1968 level, then we will talk. Even with shift, there is more than enough offense right now.

An outright ban would be stupid but I don’t think it’s ridiculous to put some kind of limits on the shift.

I mentioned this earlier. It's similar to when the NBA decided to make zone defenses illegal, because it was leading to low scoring games. They ended up allowing it again because players and teams found ways to exploit the zone defense , mostly shooting over it, or having big men get better at passing, especially from the foul line area.

The shift is similar. There are inherent disadvantages to the shift. It leaves large areas open. Instead of taking advantages of those gaps, the more desired route has been attempting to go over the shift. It wouldnt be boring if players used the created gaps, rather than strictly focus on launch angles over the reinforced areas, with contact being deemed largely irrelevant.

I get the argument about hitting where the defense isn’t. But guys don’t become dead pull hitters because they just don’t feel like hitting to all fields. If it was so easy to just hit against the shift, guys like Joey Gallo would surely do that.

But that's the point isnt it? The shift is played because of a batters tendencies. They are positioning defenders for the maximum chances for outs. It would be insane to ban that just because some players cant adjust their swing. It would be like changing the rules when everyone was doing the Hack-a-Shaq because he couldnt hit free throws. The NBA realized it would be dumb to change the rules for players that are inadequate at certain things, rather than make the player adjust, or get better at what they are inadequate at.
