I don't like the idea of 2 99 cards, I just don't. And this card will be better than the other one despite 2015 Harper being better than 2021 Harper
I mean how can SDS predict Harper would be the MVP this season. He earned MVP before and they released a card for him. He got MVP again so they’re giving him a Finest, Seems only right to me. I don’t see why it’s a problem unless you don’t like Harper.
I mean Abreu didn't get a finest card last year. Trout got a Signature series and not a finest in 19(The current finest Trout is completely made up.) the only thing likely to separate finest Harper from award harper is Power vs L, Fielding, and Quirks. Its just a waste when people are still waiting on Puckett etc.
And to be clear, I don't hate Harper, far from it. I just thinks that tgis further proves that cards based on the current season are far too juiced. 2015 Harper is arguably the best non-Bonds hitting season of the past 25 years. Legends and non-current season flashbacks deserve more than what they get
Harper is easily one of my favorite players, but giving him two 99s is absolutely one of the dumbest things SDS has ever done content-wise. The only way it’ll make sense is if the finest has significantly worse attributes against lefties, significantly worse reaction, but slightly better fielding. But of course they’re going to pretend this year was better than his 2015 season and boost every single attribute out the [censored].
If I were someone that cared about puckett, bagwell, etc., then SDS making a pointless 99 like this is something I’d be furious over.
If any at SDS actually cares about stats, they should be ashamed of themselves for even suggesting that Harper’s 2021 season was anywhere close to his 2015 season.
I would be with you if this card was a reward for something or part of a program. However, it's a gift, you literally don't have to do anything to earn it. Stop complaining. Don't use it if you don't like it.
You know what would have been a better gift? Kirby Puckett. Or literally any other card that didn't have a 99. I would have even accepted a no-hitter card for some of those guys that threw one so early in the season their topps nows are under 90. A Harper card that is marginally better, even with a worse season than 2015 Harper, is stupid. It just seems like fan service for the Phillies fans that have been crying about a Phillies 99 Harper for 3 years
You know what? You're right, they could've given us a better gift. They could've given us a player who doesn't have a 99 yet. You know what they didn't have to do? Give us a gift at all. I don't have the MVP Harper so I'm looking forward to using this one. People will find a way to complain about anything nowadays lol.
The card being a gift is totally irrelevant. It’s the fact that someone at SDS had to spend time putting together the card art, creating the attributes, coding the card into the game, all for a useless duplicate 99 that makes zero statistical sense when compared to his previous 99. The time could’ve and should’ve been spent making a different, new 99. That’s the point, and it’s a extremely valid criticism/complaint.
As far as the gift goes, I would’ve been happier with just a bundle of packs and a bat skin, without this nonsensical garbage.
I disagree, the gift aspect is completely relevant. I get that they could've made a new 99 card, but I don't think that they're going to not release some other new 99 player because they released this one. We're not losing anything. We're getting a 99 for no work. Its not useless for me, I don't have the other Harper and I will definitely use this one.
As for the statistical aspect, just take one look at the future stars series and you'll see that SDS does not care about statistical relevancy when making attributes.
The gift aspect is entirely irrelevant to the actual point though, which is that one or more people at SDS spent time making this card that should’ve gone towards making a new 99 that isn’t just a marginally different duplicate of an existing 99. There was no reason to make this card other than to appease Phillies fans that have been bitching and moaning about getting a good Phillies Harper. Just because you don’t have the other 99, doesn’t mean this one needs to exist. The other one is already there for anyone that wanted a 99 Harper.
Future stars have nothing to do with this. It’s the fact that SDS is pretending that Harper’s 2021 season deserves better attributes than his far, far superior 2015 season. It’s a joke that this new card exists, plain and simple. Harper should not have a better card than 2015, and making two 99s of him is a total pointless waste. As someone that has Harper in their top 3 favorite players, doing this was a really stupid move by SDS.
We'll have to agree to disagree on this I guess. It's a gift, it costs you no time, stubs, or effort to obtain. If you want you can sell it, or sell the other more expensive one and use this one. You lose nothing and only stand to gain from this free card. If they're going to release other new 99s I'm sure they have a plan for it and this one isn't taking the place of one of them. It just sounds a little bit like entitlement to be complaining about something that's 100% free.
If you look at the cards they've put out this year it's clear that they decide attributes in a vacuum. Meaning they only consider that players stats, (or potential stats) for that year or series or game, whatever it is, and not against other players or other versions of that player. That's why you get future stars and Topps now cards that are better than hall of famers. Not saying a think that's a good system, but that's how it is. So they're not comparing Harper's season this year to his MVP year, just solely basing his attributes off of what he did this year. Griffey's best year was clearly not his 500 home run milestone season with the reds, but that's his best card, so are you mad about that one too?

Career milestone cards are signature cards with a a slight attribute bump and a fresh coat of paint. The only thing in Griffey's attributes that reflects that season with the reds is the uniform. Entirely irrelevant to this conversation

You’re still missing the point. It doesn’t matter if the card is free or costs a million stubs, it’s a pointless card that has no reason to exist. By making this card when the other 99 already exists, they are absolutely insinuating that his 2021 season deserves better attributes, which is just laughable. This has nothing to do with entitlement, and everything to do with the fact that this card is useless, pointless, has no reason to exist, and makes a total mockery of his far and away better 2015 season. As far as I’m concerned, Harper only has one 99 and it’s the real one, not this phony garbage. End of story.
Congrats to Phillies fans for their gift though I guess.

But you're saying that the finest Harper shouldn't be as good as the MVP one because his stats were better his MVP year. I'm saying they clearly don't compare other seasons of the same player when deciding attributes. Hence griffey's best card not being a Mariners card, or Pujols best card not being a Cardinals card.
-
Harper is one of my three favorite players and this is my take:
As someone who doesn't play online and therefore shelled out a good amount for his MVP card a while back it stings a little bit, but I've enjoyed that card for MONTHS.
I think the fact it was a duplicate 99 is the only reason they just gifted it the way they did. It fits the Finest theme and allows those that didn't earn or pay for his MVP card to have a great current year card of one of this year's MVPs. They wouldn't just hand over a random legend that still hasn't gotten a 99 in this fashion.

You are missing my point here. Reds Griffey has Mariners attributes with a Reds Jersey. Pujols has cardinals attributes with an Angels Jersey. There aren't 2 99s of Griffey or Pujols in this years game either. There are two harpers. If there was a finest Harper without the awards one then it would be fine. You can't predict Harper winning MVP, no. But you could have easily predicted Harper play well enough to deserve a finest card at seasons end. Why do you think we never got another Tatis before TA5? They either should have done the same with Harper or just stuck with the Awards one. Two 99 cards of one player is extremely redundant, and could have been a spot given to someone else. Even if it was a finest they could have Used JRam, Judge, or Mullins and made them different enough from their allstar cards to justify giving them another one.

Imagine being mad about receiving a gift.

Dang, how did this thread get so hostile? And from guys that usually don't get so worked up. I get that this card is rather pointless (except for the people who don't buy expensive cards and don't have Awards Bryce, nor will they be buying him). For those of us that have Bryce and every other card, this is just another card to toss in the collection or 15k stubs if you don't want it. Some people dig it because it has him as a Phillies player, some think that is irrelevant. I'm just not sure where the big dispute lies.
His attributes are inflated because it's December and every card is juiced by this point.

The dispute is that it could have been anyone else that didn't have a 99. Any other player that didn't have a 99 and I would be extremely happy with this

Legends and non-current season flashbacks deserve more than what they get
Totally agree. I never understood how cards could ever have higher attributes than guys who are legitimately in the HOF with great career numbers.
I know like Bench or Ripken. I could go on but I hate to complain. Future stars have better stats sometimes. I wonder why they do this. Plus Johnny Bench’s head is gigantic. He looks like lord Farquaad off Shrek!

Last years George Fosters head looked like a blimp. Some guys they can never get right
