Stan Musial should be faster
-
I was interested in learning more about the career of Stan the Man so I did a little research.
Turns out he is 19th on the all time triples list, and no one ahead of him on the list played after WWII. Not even close. Only one guy was even born in the 20th century (1903).
The year this card represents, his MVP season of 1948, he led the majors with 18 triples.
Yet he only has 47 speed. Unless you’re playing at Polo, I don’t think 47 speed can even get a triple in this game.
Anyway, just sharing what I learned about the great Stan Musial...

Interesting stuff.. geezz SDS why you do my man Stan like this??
-
You can see where he hit those triples though and it's hard to gauge. 9 came at Sportsman's Park, 3 at Shibe, and 2 at Forbes. In 1948 all three were over 400ft in the alleys to CF. Much bigger parks back then. He does go up to 50 speed after Prestige.
I would think he was faster than that in his prime, but objectively how much faster should he be is really a guess.
-
Triples back then definitely had more to do with the parks than the speed of the runner. Lou Gehrig is 33rd all time in Triples and I don’t see anyone making this argument for him lol

Gehrig’s SIG card last year had 64 speed. If Stan Musial had 64 speed, I would not have made this post.

He wasn't slow tho. He should be at about reggie jackson level of speed.

Totally agree, they really messed up Stan’s speed. Should be around 65 I think. And now the Ted Williams card is out and he is faster than Stan? Please!
-
Welp, we're a year later and this post is relevant once again. The man once nicknamed "The Donora Greyhound" has roughly the same sprint speed as David Ortiz this year.
-
I agree with OP, not arguing what he is saying. Just wanted to say I have 2 triples with Votto already and he only has 25 speed. Still, for someone who led the majors in triple, some speed on the card makes sense.

I don't get with Stan and why SDS doesn't give him better numbers. The season that this card is from ranks as one of highest of all time in terms of WAR. He should at least have the potential to be an endgame card and he never is.

What more do you want with him? He already has Maxed out contact and 98/ 121 power. You want fielding and speed? Is is an endgame card at 1B.

Hate to tell you but he isn't even as good as Vlad Jr....he won't be better than Lou. He isn't better than Papi.

1B is all personal preference and always has been. They are all the same. IMO any power numbers over 100 is fine. There isn't a noticeable difference between 100 and 125 power. I also think the whole endgame argument is nonsense too though so what do I know. Using players you like is far more enjoyable then conforming to the meta lineup

If he had fielding and speed then yes. But mostly, some consistency would be nice
But, lets compare him further to Gehrig
Gehrig (1928)
47 Doubles
13 Triples
4 Stolen Bases
11 Caught Stealing
61 speed in the gameMusial (1948)
46 Doubles
18 Triples
7 Stolen Bases
3 Caught Stealing
47 speed in the gameIt is curious how comparing those stats Musial could be considered slower? Plus in 1948 he played 1,271 innings in the outfield and only 5 innings at first.
It would be interesting to see what criteria they used to rate speed on these older players.

Personally, every year Votto is almost always my endgame... I hit so well with him. For me Votto, Winker, Jr, and Trea Turner always have the best swings. Musial is actually up there in swings for me.
