I just don't think it works as an MLB team name was there a fan vote or did the owners just pick a name out of a hat

I can't agree to that until I see what the other choices they were considering were.

Guardians is quite good if you're a local to Cleveland because of the art deco Guardians on one of the major bridges, but outsiders to Cleveland like me were a bit confused by the name until that detail emerged.

This. The people from there understand it and that is really all that matters. Look at some of the other names out there in sports that make no sense for their respective cities because the team was originally somewhere else. Lakers, Jazz ext. Those are laughable but people don't blink an eye at it because of whatever reason and it's been a round a while.
