You can play people out of position and still have insane defense.

Yeah until they don't.
I accidently had chipper at first the other day and he did fine, until he dropped a throw from 3rd and cost me an event game.
So then how does this work at all?
You can move certain players out of position and get minimal punishment and some you will completely ruin whatever fielding attributes they had.
Typically if you move a ss to 2nd or 3rd they don't get a huge out of position punishment.
You can move players around to different positions on the squad screen and see what there outbof position fielding will be. But they will get slower animations as well
Ahh okay, well if you want a guy who breaks those limits play Banks at third.

Go ahead play Ernie Banks at third, guy will play like Robinson/Arenado diving and stopping balls hit 105+ all day. Thought they removed stuff like this starting in 18.
It will be fine, until the AI figures out it can use it as a "variable" to take a win away from you.
Nothing consistent in any strategy, variable, difficulty, etc. Wish it were, would make the game a lot more fun and immersive.
Energy, confidence, speed, arm-strength, stealing, etc. matter when they can be used to predetermine a result..which ultimately determines W/L. No consistency.

1st base is one of the places it doesn’t work as well. They can’t scoop throws and drop them constantly leaving easy outs on base. SS @ 3rd or 2nd seems to be a known issue though lol.
-
Does Ernie not have 3rd as secondary this year? I didnt use him long enough to notice because his defense at SS was horrible.
-
I do believe it might be consistent with non-catchers playing behind the plate. Always seems to be retribution there. I believe I'll try it a couple games in a row and monitor the consistency.

i don't do this myself but i have no problem with good defensive players being able to play out of position. they are legends and professionals. moving 20 feet to your right shouldn't mean you are physically incapable of diving or fielding a ball.

Well, when you can have single A pitchers that will likely never make it to, or have impact in, The Show (odds are against them) and give 'em a 97 rating you might as well just let them play catcher as well. Why not?
It's the wonderful, wacky, happy, syrupy world of MLB the Show where anything is possible and everyone takes home a trophy.

Here we go again with 'participation' trophy nonsense.

The community in 2021: Waaah prospects are getting highly rated cards! That's not realistic!
Also the community in 2021: Waaah I don't hit a homerun with every single good swing!
