Orioles trading Villar

Does anybody know why the Orioles thought it was a good idea to trade their best player to the Marlins for just one below average 14th round LHP (Easton Lucas). What was the thought process behind it? Why didn’t they get more for him? Why didn’t they just try and keep him?

Apparently the Orioles had their eye on Lucas at the draft...they didn't keep him because he'll be a free agent and the price to pay him wouldn't be worth it on a team that is nowhere near contention

I believe they actually DFA'd Villar first. That means they make a trade within 7 days (I think) or he is released for nothing for anyone to sign. If I'm right about that, then that means the Marlins probably gave them the best offer of any other team, which wasn't much, but better than they would've gotten had they simply released him.

I think they tried to trade him at the winter meetings, but he had a good year and was going to cost about $8 million and they were selling high. Not the easiest guy to trade if you believe he’s going to regress next season (4 WAR last year, more than his 3 previous seasons combined). So salary dump plus they got at least something for him.
