Won't get into the whole Bryant thing..
Just want to point out that most people who work at SDS are not Padre fans and aren't from San Diego.
Just from the streams over the years, there's literally one or 2 padre fans... A couple guys from Canada, Nick is a chisox guy. Luis is Yankees.. etc..Must just be a coincidence? Hmmm. What is most who work, and how do you know. Not saying you're wrong, but you are speaking like you know because of some survey of all the folks that have a hand in creating these ratings. And, maybe you do.
Pretty easy to cherry-pick, but it really stands to reason from any sort of logic you would ever want to inject that the players from the town that creates this game are given a better shake..further would make one think it's intentional.
First off, the studio is in San Diego.. that's it... They don't hire locally. They pick developers from all over, and internally from Sony.. secondly, for the last 6 years of MLB the show, they have streamed tournaments with their team, along with content, etc.. they've been very open to who they are, what each does and also what team they cheer for, and where they're from. Almost none of them are from San Diego... Luis (Yankee fan) runs the DD team. There's a twin and Jays fan on that team if I remember too.
All it takes is one Project Manager or one Director (from San Diego) with some influence to say "hey boyz, be extra kind to my favorite team". I was once a low-level programmer and was heavily influenced by the brass. It's how you get ahead.
Not saying you are wrong about anything you said. I'm saying that doesn't mean there isn't bias in the roster ratings. And everything I've seen indicate SD players get a speculative bump for whatever reason.

Well Kris Bryant has a negative defensive war this year and was horrible last year all around. He also has done most of his offensive damage against lefties and struggled against righties.
Despite your take in Machado, he still has a positive defensive war this year and was great all around last year.
If both trend in the same direction this season, they will meet around 85 overall soon imo.
Still has a positive defense WAR. You do realize that WAR, in and of itself, is not the final benchmark. It's one of many. There are only 3 other 3B in NL that have more errors than Machado. One happens to be Mr. Gold Glove himself.
We can compare stats all day long. Not going there, but I am sticking to my guns that SDS puts their own players on a pedestal with bias and disregard for their customers fave players. Not cool.
Ok, he also has a negative uzr. Both stats are much better indicators than errors for defensive value. Look, I think he catches Machado soon, but there are valid reasons why Machado was higher up until this point.
Didn't really want to get into this, but couldn't leave it alone. Just like you, I didn't know any of this before I googled it and researched it. But, sometimes you gotta do some research.
OAA (Outs above average) is supposedly the new gold standard for fielding. In that, yes, this year Bryant is -1..likely has a lot to do with the fact the Cubs have him playing multiple positions. But, -1 is not even close to terrible or a liability. In fact, -1 is above league average.
Machado is a 2..not bad. But Chapman has a 7, and Machado is tied with some of the great 3B like Matt Duffy and Brian Anderson. It's surely not stellar, but not bad.
But, look this up. Bryant's highest in his whole career was an 8..his lowest a -3..which, based on league average, isn't terrible...maybe..maybe slightly below average.
You want to hear about Machado's? Sure ya do. His highest ever was a 6 and lowest a -7. He's been a -6 twice.
So, based on what the experts say is the best single defensive measure of an Infielder..Bryant, over his career, is head and shoulders above Machado. Not even close.
The reason I hate these type pi$$in contests is because it's the one that turns up the most telling numbers that has to do the most work. I don't wanna work..I just want to complain.

I take it you are relatively new and didn't see the laughable things for SD last year. I will say Bryant has the same flaw JD Martinez has though to prevent them from being diamonds and it has nothing to do with batting and gets "fixed" once a year....the defense in the game where Machado gets a big boost. I do agree with you some players shouldn't be as high as they are on SD cough cough Grisham cough but it is their game and they very clearly do whatever they see fit with it
This is a really really naive take on your part.
Bryant a defensive liability!? Have you watched what he's done for a Cubs squad this year that has had to rely on both platoon guys and minor leaguers to replace the injured starters?
Because if you haven't, you should. And you'd definitely be thinking otherwise about Bryant. Dude hasn't played third base since mid-April! He's been called upon to play each of the outfield positions (above average to great by the way) and first base (average to above there).
When you have a versatile MVP caliber player like that and he's not getting bumped to diamond, there's a real problem. I might be a Cubs homer, but I know A LOT of folks around baseball would put him in the Top 2 or 3 for MVP right now.
To compare him with JD Martinez's poor defense is a huge [censored] mistake.
Sometimes I think these extremely versatile defensive players don’t get the defensive rating they deserve. This might be because they’re not always playing their top position, which is a shame. Machado basically sticks to one position, and is good at it, so his rating is high. Throw machado in RF, let alone CF, and I’m hard pressed to believe he could even hold Bryant’s jockstrap. Vice versa, throw Bryant at machados position, and machado wins the battle.

It’s so nice to see that the Padres are so good now that haters are coming out of the woodwork with conspiracies. It’s also nice to see this coming from a non Dodgers fan, I assume. Go appropriately rated Padres!
-
I would say Craig Kimbral's numbers and roster update roo-rooing is worse than Bryant's . He was the best closer in the NL for the 2nd half of last year. He is the one of the best closers in the NL for all of this year Lights out again tonight against SD. He gets upgraded from 81 to 82. That's disrespect on a legendary level.
But, I will say SD's own Melancon has been strangely absent from the roster updates. He's leading the league in saves. I'm sure they'll correct that soon. Should be interesting to see that jump. Possibly the first player to ever go from silver straight to diamond.

I dont think its that serious lol. What exactly would a project manager have to gain by bumping someones rating a few points? Ratings in a video game have zero impact on people in real life so i highly doubt anyone is walking around telling people to pump up some numbers for their favorite players.

Just a fanboy thing. Because tto prove they can..it's funny too them, perhaps an inside joke. Maybe they like the esteem. A power thing perhaps. Just to see if they could do it. Because it is a game and it's no big deal, and we got the power, would be the biggest reason to just do it.
I could come up with a whole laundry list.

I'll put a little more stock in your "struggled against righties" comment if he comes back from their upcoming west coast swing with even worse splits. Because a .289 average with an OPS slightly under .890 isn't something I would entirely classify as a struggle.
And he hit .184 against them last year
Please stop pulling stats from "last year" ... The season was shortened considerably (34 games vs 162) by that logic Bryant has already played another 'year' bc he only had 112 PA last year and currently sits at 162 PA...and is raking at the plate like FULL seasons previous.
-
Stro, before last night - and the Brenly comment - had a sub-3 era, but remains a Silver.
I thought wins didn't carry the weight they used to. I guess they still do in his case -
They play favorites and adjust ratings based on market, not skills unless it's obvious. They do it to make sure not many can profit off the game market.
-
they kept the always intense matt chapman as diamond for a few years bc of his defense. I assume that is why Machado is still higher and even though i consider Bryant to be an ok defensive player and plays multiple positions he has had his struggles.

By that logic don't use stats from this year either. It is roughly the same amount of games.
But that isn't the point, SDS uses this year and the last two for live series ratings. That has nothing to do with me.

The bias is there without a doubt. Funny how it took years to give Nolan Arenado respectable fielding ratings. Now that he’s not a division rival he has 99 fielding haha. When Machado has had better fielding ratings (even in a secondary SS) than Nolan did at 3B. It was laughable for awhile there.
-
We all know none of the ratings make a rats patootie in the flow of the game for the most part. It's just the symbolic favoritism and bias that should be troubling to customers that put down their hard-earned dough. In many cases to follow their favorite players and utilize them. I'm an admitted Cubs fan and Bryant is getting disrespected this year. Machado seems to not be.
Hurray that SDS, someone said whether factual or not who knows, is using the last 2 years and this year as their barometer. I'm sure they've got some logic to justify that decision. Someone else said they only adjust defense ratings once a year (for the life of me I don't understand that decision). Are defensive ratings not in the same potential for flux and fall-off as offensive? Is it because it would take a little more work?
I managed an IT shop and we were all about consistency. If we had taken the leap to put out numbers like this(hang our butts out for the world to see) we would have done our very best to make sure it didn't boomerang back on us. Maybe it's because we were a smaller company trying to rise. As opposed to a huge multi-year successful company that might be just fat and happy..content to go through the motions and have the accountants do all the work counting the revenues.. I really dunno.
Now, if you really wanted to take the time and start following up on this algorithm would it be accurate in every case? I'm going to guess pretty far from it. I'm sure many cards got ups they shouldn't and the reverse.
I don't understand it, but I'm just a humble player of the game.
-
When Chicago North Side Studio makes a game buy it. Until than it is what it is..
-
SDS definitely plays favorites. It’s not new and also not really a big deal. Yes for a few years now Padres players have been pretty inflated in some cases. There are also other examples. I remember they got a lot of flack last year for artificially inflating Luis Robert on the White Sox. And a lot of people have questioned Aaron Judge’s rating over the years as well. I’m sure there are others I can’t think off of the top of my head.

The Braves one was insane for a while there. Smoltz had like 10 cards one year. Reminded me of the year when Cepeda had like 7 cards. 17 I think it was.
