I could get a hit off of an MLB pitcher

I think if the average person actually knew how difficult it is to play baseball at a high level, the sport would be more popular. And how easy the MLB players make it look is incredible.

You’re wrong. I hadn’t played baseball since high school and joined an adult league at age 27. I had to relearn just about everything. Fielding came back relatively quickly.. hitting is a whole different story. If you haven’t even seen high school pitching, I doubt you even touch a single pitch. Have you even used a wood bat?
Watch the video, it doesn't look too fast, if I get 20 ABs I can just sit fastball and take a swing in the zone, that's probably 100 pitches so statistically I should connect with one and find a hole I feel like.
Bro... It’s a lot harder than you think haha. I don’t think you’d get a hit in 20 ABs against a Single A pitcher. Unless you played high level baseball into your 20s, you aren’t touching a thing without a ton of training and practice.
The worst hitting pitcher ever had about a .045 OBP in the MLB. Most pitcher only players still take BP and stuff so that’s not surprising, but that goes out the window since this is the worst hitting pitcher ever, in all likelihood, I can hit better than the worst hitting pitcher ever, and being an 18 yo male with a decent build, I think I could.
I think you’re underestimating how difficult it is to hit a baseball. Especially live pitching. And then you’re going to do this against someone who has trained their whole life to play baseball professionally and was good enough to make it into the MLB? Not to mention the highest level of ball you’ve played is middle school? Come on dude haha. Do you have any idea how good you have to be to even sniff the Majors?
I am talking about the worst hitter EVER in the MLB. In all likelihood I am a better hitter than him. It’s nothing against the pitchers, but they aren’t untouchable, in 20 ABs you could probably guess and swing early to find a hole somewhere in there.
-
I like how he ll get maybe 100 pitches in 20 abs. Knowing that hes not hit before there wont be one pitch thrown closer than 6 inches to the edge of the zone.

Go to a batting cage.
I know the last time I went, it took me about 7 swings at 60mph to even foul one off. Now maybe some of you guys that played in HS or college would be able to have the same experience facing 85mph but OP is dreaming imo.
6 or 7 swings... in 20 ABs I might get 100 pitches. I could spent a few pitches just swinging in the zone with hopes of a strike, and there’s an ok chance I make contact like that.
You’d look just like the dude who can’t lay off the low ball in this game. I’d bet money on that.

You should do a challenge and post it. Would need to give the pitcher some incentive to beat you just to make it legit but I’d watch that.

Then I’ll just take and walk a ton? Or take until I get in good counts for a strike to come
-
When I go to games in person I try to get there early and i love watching the pitchers do long toss in the outfield. I sit there and wonder why the ball just seems to levitate off the ground when they throw it.
So, I don’t think I could hit the long toss throw let alone from the mound and let alone with a wood bat.
Honestly, I think if I got in an MLB batter’s box and watched one pitch I’d probably bail out afraid it would hit me.

It doesn’t matter though, because it’s 20 ABs. He hangs a few of those offspeed and the challenge is over.

Come on. He’s gonna go from middle school ball to laying off offspeed stuff that get pros out just waiting for that slow 92 mph fastball so he can smash it. Cause he’s 18 and got a decent build.

I’d be willing to put money that out of 20 ABs against any major league pitcher you would go 0-25 because some would be so bad they’d have to count as 2 outs. But love the confidence.

Watch the video, the Kluber sinker at the start looks more hittable than you think. I just have to throw the bat head around and find a hole once in 20 ABs
-
Firstly, the video looks pretty hittable. I know it’s just a video, but being able to see pitches well is half of it. If I was to do this I’d obviously probably find a bat light enough to where I felt my bat speed gave me a better chance, after all I’m not swinging for the fences.
Secondly, my argument isn’t about my skill or the lackthereof by MLB pitching, it’s just that I think statistics are on my side and I have decent enough ability to do it.
Thirdly, in 100 or so pitches I’d get used to his patterns more to better predict the pitch, if I sit fastball and just swing in the zone as he finishes his windup, there’s a decent chance of good contact if I do this a few times throughout my 100 pitches.
Fourthly, I’m a lefty so if the pitcher was a RHP, a lot of their breaking balls would be easier to see and hit than it would be for a righty. I’d also get out the box quicker if I make weak contact or needed to run out a bunt for an infield hit.

Good example of what's not being considered here -- spin.
I played tennis at county level in the UK. My club was a training site for national team level players and coaches. I got to hit with them sometimes. You know on TV, when you see the pros scampering around whacking the ball back and forth? You see the different spins, but what you don't see because of the presentation angle is just how wicked those spins are at that level. I've faced it on court and it was way above my pay grade. This is the issue with live baseball at a high level as well. There's no accounting for how wickedly the ball will be moving and it's very unlikely someone unprepared for that level could succeed in getting a hit. Not impossible, obviously -- I hit a forehand winner against a national team guy. But those good shots were few and far between, and a UK national team tennis player without an international ranking is probably roughly equivalent to a low minor league baseball player. I still got my [censored] kicked. I expect anyone facing a major leaguer who's not at that level is going to struggle.

Ok but this is 1 hit in 20 ABs, that’s like you having to score 1 point in 5 Tennis games, it sounds not only possible but likely

I faced 90+ 1 time playing legion ball and I made a fool of myself and when I somehow hit the ball I jammed my hands so bad I had catchers thumb for a week only to ground out to second on a ball that maybe went 40mph off the bat. There’s no way you could get a hit. Yes you could make contact but with a wood bat you’re more likely than likely going to break the bat if you’ve never used one. Also the worst mlb player of all time is 10 times better than anyone who never made the show

That there was sort of mean spirited don't you think? I know there are trolls everywhere but man, just try to get along. Everyone went to middle school..do you have a problem with middle school. C'mon man.

Yeah this is just wrong, the worst pro hitter ever isn’t ten times better than me. Oftentimes, bad pitchers will go up there and take three pitches. I’m at least swinging every AB, increasing my chances of a hit, did you also have 20 ABs to adjust?

I believe this comes down to FPS. Unless you are actually standing in front of it you will never get a true feel for how fast it actually is, the cameras are playing tricks on you even more so than your confidence level.
If anything the cameras make it faster because of less frames to see the ball.
Yeah I was just being polite. It’s not input lag or response time, if you think that pitch would actually look SLOWER in real life you are not the 1 for 20 hitter you think you are.
-
I have a buddy that frequently asks “do you think you could get a hit off so and so?” When a name comes up. I say heck no. He plays devils advocate and asks how many pitches would it take for you to get a hit...
OP, you’re just looking at the speed of a single ball coming at you. That’s not a “pitch”. If you’re just trying time up a 95mph fastball, sure. But imagine feeling like you’re starting to time it up, and they drop a curve, let alone a change up. Now imagine they throw 95, 2 inches from your face. I saw Kevin Pillar get drilled. No thanks.
