Thursday’s Babe Ruth moment broken

I think people in this thread should watch the documentary "Fastball". Using science and applying it to today's way of clocking pitch speeds....Walter Johnson was hitting 97+ miles an hour and the second fast pitch of all time , 107.8, was registered by Feller in 1946....so pitch speed argument is rediculous, guys back in Ruth's day where most certainly hitting 95+ based on how pitch speeds are calculated now.
-
After 2 Ruth singles, I struck his porky buttocks out.
Every failure I restarted in case they said I failed. -

I've watched that doc, and they definitely don't come to that conclusion. It was basically impossible to prove. Conditioning back then would make it near impossible to consistently reach those speeds.
Even 10 years ago the average pitch speed was a few mph slower than today. Every pitcher throws 95+ now. You'd be lucky to have a handful that did it even 35 years ago... Let alone 100 years.. when guys were going to war, starving half the time, eating terribly and drinking before and after games.. -

IRL Babe wouldn't even know what to do against Chris Sale, let's be honest.
Yeah because babe never hit good pitching and sale some how could get the best hitter of all time out consistently...
Babe is the best hitter of all time (actually 2nd to Bonds, but that's beside the point) because he was that much better than his comp.
No pitcher back then had the insane training, mechanics, science and tech that professional athletes do today.
90mph straight fastballs were the norm even up to 1990 lol...
On top of all that, Chris Sale is filthy even in today's insane standards. So then by that logic, with the same training, mechanics, science, and tech available to Ruth, he would be even better than he already was.
I dont care what anyone argues, if you take any all time past great, and give them the chance to use everything available to modern athletes, they would still be all time greats today.
In that hypothetical, absolutely.
But I'm just talking about plopping Babe Ruth circa 1927 against Chris Sale today (healthy)... He wouldn't stand a chance.I think you should pump the brakes on this argument a bit. Unless you are going to share with the class when these magical changes take place. 1950? 1970? 1990? I agree that the average player from 1927 would struggle against Sale but its not like guys started throwing hard yesterday. Baseball skill….you either have it or you don’t…..or didn’t.
That's all I said. Hitters from 1920's (Babe) would struggle against Sale. That's it.. no brakes needed..
And the average fastball velocity has dramatically jumped in the past 25 years. Dramatically.
Every sport has leaps in performance and conditioning. Baseball is probably one of the biggest examples of that.
Even in the last 5 years, spin rate is now being optimized.Other sports have nothing to do with baseball. If you want to say that an average offensive lineman from 1950 would get absolutely steamrolled by Danielle Hunter, fine. But there were plenty of guys throwing hard 50 years ago. More now? Yeah but I think that the leaps are much more mitigated by a sport like baseball where skill is still king.
ETA: and struggling against Sale is a weak argument in itself. Modern hitters struggled against Sale. If want to be bold, make a case as to why Randy Dobnak would win the 1927 Cy Young.

I can't "hit" even on the playstation console, so that may be hard on a dinky phone...but striking a batter out is pretty easy. I mainly use it to knock out my daily objective in Madden Ultimate Team. Much easier to play MUT than The Show on the phone.

All I had to do was FB, FB, Slider way out of the zone and completed the challenge in less than 30 seconds️

You really need to do your research on all time greats. Yes they didn't last as long as they do today because of training but most certainly aren't better just because they exist today.. Dude they had all that and didn't have video where they could see how pitchers pitched them and have an analytics guy show them what was thrown to them. Chis sale is filthy by any standard but he isn't an all time great and never will be. It also doesn't mean babe wouldn't destroy him..

You're exactly right. And he's not the best hitter of all time. I love the Babe, but facts are facts. He would be lost.
lmao,,, you guys are nuts.. Ok think of it this way,, you plug chris back in time and he knows what he knows... How is he better than a red faber? a lefty grove? Any of those guys were better than chris will ever be and they throw hard and have devastating breaking stuff. btw they pitched almost every day so you always got the best pitchers. Chris' arm would blow out in a year unless he changed his approach.
You do it the other way and bring babe to now and its's even worse. Babe with actual video to see how pitchers pitch to him and he just gets better.. He would have good coaching and diet would be better. He would feast n 4th and 5th starters and bull pen guys. The balls are much indusive for hitting in today's era also not to mention the parks are much smaller. He would hit 900 homers if he was doing it today..

Huh? No... Aaron is great.. top 10. But not close to Babe... Teddy you'd have an argument in just pure hitting..
Aaron retired #1 in home runs and #2 in hits only 400 and change from cobb.
No he didnt have the 370 and 390 avgs of ruth. but then ruth ended up 1000 hits less.
They are opinions though its okay they are differentRuth was a pitcher too,,, aaron is great but he isn't a top ten all time hitter. power wise, yes,, overall no.. Ruth is the best..

Oh I know my history buddy. I know pitchers didn't have breaking stuff that they do today. The average pitcher 50-100 years ago had very little break to today's standards. Sandy Koufax is a great example of a guy who did have insane break on his curve, and he was unhittable for that time. He was an outlier. Guys have that kind of break everywhere in today's game. Because it's taught early and perfected with performance tech ad training..
You said they didn't last as long as today?? You're absolutely backwards!!! They lasted forever back then, as they were expected to pitch all 9 innings (and quite often did). Today they go by pitch counts. That was not the case back then at all.
Today is a specialized game. Relievers used in specific roles, openers, piggy backers.. it's max effort for short bursts. The exact opposite of the old game. You can romanticize history all you want (I usually do) but today's athletes are much better trained. A pitcher today blows away a pitcher from 50-100 years ago. That said, the greats are what they are because they dominated "their" competition. They were ahead of their time. If you gave most of them the training, tech, etc. we have today, do they dominate in today's league? Ya, probably. Some most definitely!!
But I never said otherwise. I said, plop a hitter from 100 years ago up against a guy like Chris Sale (a filthy lefty, obviously not a legend lol) and he'd be have a very tough time. Even the great Bambino. -

Again you didn't actually argue a point other than saying the game is different. Skills' in baseball translate throughout time. This isn't football.
You used koufax as an example which was a 60's pitcher but the 20's pitchers had some of the best of all time when it came to control and break.. No they didn't throw 96 but they didn't walk everyone either. -

I get athletes are better now and better coached. That is an argument to be made but when making that particular argument people never give the same coaching to the players they are arguing against. That is why I talk about skill's translate throughout time. You put any of the all time greats into today's game and they are just going to be better than they were then. If you do in reverse then you have to take all that training and knowledge away or at least put it in a realistic sense of how they would be different. anyways have a good one.

As I've said multiple times in this thread now, I agree that skills mostly translate. Give them the same advantages in training, performance, development we do today and they would be great (most of them). But we aren't talking about that. We are just comparing today's standards in performance to back then. Today is obviously a higher standard. As everything escalates naturally. Plop a guy from 100 years ago today and he'd be screwed.
We aren't going to agree here like I said, so I'm leaving it alone. Talking in circles now -
