External hard drive

Anyone out there use external hard drives? When I switch from PS4 to PS5, will it read the same data or does an external hard drive need to be reformatted for PS5?

The PS5 reads your PS4 games but you can’t save ps5 games on an external hard drive at this time.

You can't use an external hard drive on a PS5 at all?

There's been discussion about approved internal HD expansion for the PS5, but nothing official yet.

You can only use an external drive for PS4 games. You can't even store PS5 games on an external temporarily like with Xbox. On the Series S/X, you can't run enhanced games from an external but you can at least store them on it so you don't have to redownload from the internet every time. That's been a lifesaver for using the Series S with it's 364 GB internal drive.
In my opinion, it was a major oversight by Sony. I'm hoping they eventually patch in external HDD or SSD functionality so you can at least store games on it.

OK. But my game saves from PS4 will be accessible on PS5?
Later on, yes, it would make sense for Sony to add external hard drive capabilities for PS5, but if it will access and use my PS4 saves, that helps.

Game saves should be accessible on the drive, but to be honest I'm not sure I've used any of my old saves since switching. Everything I've played has been server based like Diamond Dynasty, or I've started the game from the beginning like Ghost of Tsushima and Last of Us Part 2. Worst case scenario you could always redownload saves from the cloud. The file sizes on game saves is pretty small.
