MLBTR on the new baseball being used:
The new ball will be reduced in weight by under one-tenth of an ounce, and will also be slightly less bouncy (as determined by the coefficient of restitution, or COR).
While the end result of these changes won’t be entirely known until we see the baseball in action during the season, the changes seem to have been made in order to “increase consistency in the ball” and also deaden it to some extent. An independent lab cited in the league memo detailed a reduction by one or two feet of distance on fly balls hit beyond 375 feet, and an analyst who spoke with Sarris and Rosenthal believes “it’ll be like adding five feet of outfield walls to every wall in the big leagues.” The analyst believes an overall five percent reduction in home runs is possible, though it isn’t yet known how the newer ball will be affected by drag.

    Some MLB News:
The Cardinals have signed Yadier Molina to a one year, $9M deal.

The Rays recently signed right-handed reliever Hunter Strickland to a minor league contract with an invitation to major league spring training.

Major League Baseball and the MLBPA have reached an agreement on health and safety protocols for spring training and the regular season, Joel Sherman of the New York Post tweets.
It looks as if we will see a 10-team playoff in 2021, Sherman writes. A 26-man roster that expands to 28 in September may also be in the offering

MLBTR: THERE WILL BE NO UNIVERSAL DH IN THE 2021 SEASON.
According to Keyser, the league will keep seven-inning doubleheaders and the runner on second base in extra innings around during the upcoming campaign. However, there will not be a universal designated hitter in 2021, meaning pitchers will go back to hitting for at least another season

Interesting thought or question I'd have. I know the weight change is minimal, but I wonder if it'll have any affect on pitcher's arms? Lighter weight could cause them to overthrow and thus lead to more arm injuries ... I truly hope this isn't the case, but there's no way to know.

We do, don't we! The only thing was that I was more busy, and the results were different people, but the same thing.

[David Price] Did I see MLB is “slightly” deadening the baseball?! I thought MLB said it hadn’t been juiced? lol pitchers knew all along!! Baseballs had a different feel and a different sound. Happy to see they’re attempting to go back to the regular baseball...

Marlins have agreed to a 1-year deal with Adam Duvall. The Giants sign Jake McGee to a 2-year 7 million dollar contract

The Dallas Mavericks become the first professional American Sports Team to cease the playing of the National Anthem before games.
Owner Mark Cuban suggested the team would be doing this before the season, but it has become official after the team's first 13 home games.

Expect other NBA teams to follow the Mavs.

    (First reported: The Athletic)

Not MLB, but might impact the MLB

Longtime Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun’s future has been in question since the club declined his 2021 option at the start of the offseason.
While the Brewers and Braun have been in contact since then, no deal appears imminent, and retirement seems like a legitimate possibility for the 37-year-old.

The Cubs are planning on discussing contract extensions with some of their important veterans during spring training, president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer revealed (via Gordon Wittenmyer of NBC Sports Chicago).
It’s “almost” certain they’ll talk new deals with first baseman Anthony Rizzo and shortstop Javier Baez, Wittenmyer reports, though it’s unclear whether the Cubs will make a spirited effort to retain third baseman/outfielder Kris Bryant for the long haul. All three players are only under team for one more season. Bryant has been part of plenty rumors in recent weeks, so he seems the most likely of the trio to be part of a trade.

A report last month indicated the Yankees and free-agent outfielder Brett Gardner had resumed discussions on a contract, but that may not be the case after all.
Rather, according to Randy Miller of NJ Advance Media, the Yankees and Gardner have not even begun talks this offseason. New York has not “addressed Gardner’s status since last Halloween,” Miller writes.

The Mets attended Jake Arrieta’s recent workout for MLB clubs, and the two sides have had discussions about a potential contract in the weeks since that outing, per SNY’s Andy Martino. No deal is close.

The Athletics announced Wednesday that infielder Jed Lowrie is returning to the organization on a minor league contract. The Excel Sports client will be in Major League Spring Training and compete for a job.

The Rangers have signed Mike Foltynewicz to a one year, $2M deal with incentives, per The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, who tweets that the deal is done pending a physical. The incentives could reach $500K, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com relays.
