Topps artwork vs SDS artwork

Idk about you all, but I much prefer the original look of a card as opposed to the awards card or Sig card artwork. For example I like the look of the 95 all star McCovey card better than SIG or Awards. That’s not to say they didn’t do a good job with those. I like awards cards better than the SIG. I just prefer the original card look. Anybody else feel this way?

McCovey's 99 card looks like a black and white negative. Not appealing for sure but I still like the way the card plays.

I just used him as an example. I just prefer the original look of a card as opposed to the “SDS cards”. But I’m sure they’re plenty of people that have the opposite opinion.

I like them all. It’s good not having all of the same kinds of cards. They each have something unique but I like the old and the new

The ones that stand out as bad to me are the face of the franchise cards. Those are ugly. But the rest are good

I love the idea of using actual baseball cards and would like to see every legend and flashback be an old card. That said, I can’t put down the SDS Awards and SS designs. They knocked it out of the park with those templates.
I’m not saying they did a bad job. The awards cards are dope! I just prefer an original card!

I proposed this idea a while ago and its something that should be used. Keep the current system, but change the art to actual cards.
A Trevor Story signature would be a scan of an actual Trevor Story signature released card from that year.
Award series would be another example. Take say a Trevor Story card from the High Tek series and make that an AS card. His Signature can be a silver ink Tier One series card.

I think Bowman versions should be used more often.
I think it would be cool to see the Bowman’s 1st as the prospect cards. Bowman is known for that, yet not represented in the game, aside from the Bowman Prospect Showcase in RTTS.

Bowman would be perfect for prospects. Absolutely perfect.

It used to be all real cards. I believe immortals were among the first cards SDS designed. After immortals, real topps cards became more and more scarce.

The problem, especially for the older legends, is that some of those real-life cards look REALLY bad.
I mean, this isn't exactly the best and the brightest.

That’s one specific card. Some are better some aren’t. It’s as easy as that. Bryce MVP and live series are both great, but I prefer the MVP artwork.

While I like the idea of bringing actual Topps designs, imo the High Tek series Topps has put out in the past is pretty ugly, but I get that is preference.

While I like the idea of bringing actual Topps designs, imo the High Tek series Topps has put out in the past is pretty ugly, but I get that is preference.
Ideally I'd ask for Triple Threads, Tier One, Museum series and the Sapphire series.

The Harper and Donaldson Awards cards are awesome though. So is Future Stars Murphy and LS Winkler.

I stopped collecting cards in the early 90s so I'm not really wedded to anything current but the Topps 87 (wood grain border) are my favorites ever. As a designer (I've been in the design field since 1994) I like a nice even mix of actual cards (I love the nostalgic aspect) but I love the concept and series cards as well (Signature Series and Finest). I tend to design things on the cleaner side so I actually love the look and feel of the Signature Series. I can see how the Finest weren't for everyone but I love how they used color blocking to offset the player art.

I wish SDS had access to use Score and Upper Deck cards. They were the ones that pushed the envelope to use more than just spring training headshots and the Score Dream Team sets are serious works of art.
