The last two years they have given a 99 overall to the next year's cover guy. There was some speculation that Tatis could be on the cover next year and that Soto would be the 99 for August. Soto was the clear #2 for August and didn't crack the top 8. Therefore I believe this means he could be in line for the 99 pre-order card.

It'll be a current player.
Not even Babe made the cover in 18 and the synergy between "new exciting player" and "debut on new console/generation" is going to be too impossible to ignore.
If it weren't for that, I'd wholeheartedly endorse the concept of #21For21.

This might be an unpopular opinion but Derek Jeter wasn't good enough to get a 99 overall cover card or be a part of a big collection. Clutch is only 1 attribute. Hes not gonna have power. With a career slugging lercentage of .440. He wasn't as great of a fielder as everyone makes him out to be, good not great. Maybe a 99 postseason card but even that how are they gonna juice him enough to reach 99?

I don’t think big Papi was good enough against left handed pitching to be 99 overall either but here we are. I agree with everything you said about Jeters skill level. He is the single most overrated player in any sport of all time IMO. The reason I think of him as a potential cover athlete is pure popularity. He will sell copies of the game. Plain and simple

Definitely agree there, it would be a smart business move. Slap Jeter on the cover and a lot of people will buy it just for him.
