Why not just try to get better?

From time to time, we all match up with a really cheesy player. You know the type, they’ll get a guy on and take an extra step for five minutes delaying the game while your pitcher steps off or throws over.
When you work a couple of walks and then square one up, invariably, this opponent will dashboard in the third inning.
Why don’t these guys just spend a little time learning to hit better or pitch better, instead of relying on lame tactics? It makes no sense.

Because they get a kick out of making their opponent mad, but when they are losing, they can't achieve that goal, so they disappear.

I guess you’re right. While I do get a certain satisfaction out of beating such players, I can’t help but think the “extra step-step off or throw over” battles are problematic.

Really hoping SDS makes pick-offs more successful next year. There’s no punishment for taking an extra lead.

Well, that may work for you Mitch, since you can no doubt outhit most of your opponents.
Some of us mere mortals need to limit free runners in scoring position. -

This is a great point, slide stepping with sliders will work specifically on the trolls
Taking the time to learn to pitch with a slide step is one of the more underated skills someone can have in the game

A while ago I was in a deep BR run, and I played a free swinging guy who fit the profile you just described. I struck his Mondesi out with an offspeed pitch, since he was sitting heat all the way, and of course he reached 1st on a passed ball.
Then the game within the game started. I was already annoyed that he reached on a K, and knew he was stealing at some point. So he took a step every single time and I threw it over to 1st every single time. Then he messaged me all angry saying "PITCH THE BALL SMH", which I replied to with saying "yeah I will once you stop taking that step". I'm not lying, this sequence continued for about 15 minutes before my pitcher decided to throw it behind the 1B on the 1000th pickoff move, giving him second base.
Either way my point is this:
The guy takes an extra step, I react to that by not pitching the ball but attempt a pickoff move. After this keeps going, he gets angry with me, as if I'm the toxic player in this situation? So basically he wants me to just give up second base to him. I get really annoyed with people like this.Sure, I won't do this every single time someone takes a lead. This confuses me as well - and it's certainly not the first time I've heard/seen this happen.
A substantial part of the playerbase seems to think that you should give them the extra lead and that any attempt at combating it is toxic. As if the game doesn't already give the runner a lead. To give any extra steps equals to giving a free extra base...

I’ve had this happen to me too. There are times where I will just keep stepping off until they stop taking the lead. I’ve had it go on for twenty minutes sometimes.

Exactly. I'm just reacting to their initial move to take that extra lead. If they don't take that step, I'll just pitch the ball and continue the game without any issues, even if you end up stealing 10 bags on me. But don't blame me for reacting the way I'm supposed to.

Usually when I get into this situation, and it becomes clear after a few extra step-step off cycles that my opponent is going to continue, I actually set the stopwatch on my phone to see how long he will keep it up.
While I take the point made about pitching with slide step, and I do alternately slide step, step off, throw over, etc, I am not going to just concede second base.

I think it does yes, but it's very negligible and I'm okay with that opposed to just giving him second base.

Maybe the size of a baserunnner’s lead could be related to his stealing attribute?
