So the controversial 8÷2(2+2) math problem really turned out to be a good one here on tsn, so I thought this one might be too. Is it really a "new decade" now in 2020 or does the next decade start in 2021?

    It’s a new decade.
2020-2029 is 10 years, just like 2010-2019 was 10 years.

2020-2029 is 10 years, just like 2010-2019 was 10 years.

But the first ever decade would have been the first year through the 10th year, meaning year 11 would be the start of a new decade. So logically, the end of this decade would be a year from now and 2021 would be the start of the new one.

It's the start of a decade, we went from years starting in 201 to 202.

2020 is 2020 AD. The year 1 AD came after 1 BC as there was no 0 year. So since decades have been determined to be years “xxx0-xxx9” then would decades in the BC era have to be classified as being from xxx9-0 or xxx9-xxx1? Also better question?

    Does any of it matter?😂

No it is not. 2020 is the last year of the current decade.
In the calendar we go from 1 BC (or BCE) to 1 AD (or ACE). There is no year zero! As such, the tenth and final year of each decade or century is the one that ends with a zero...because basic math.

it all depends on how you define decade lol this is a dumb question. 2023 is the start of a decade if you want it to be.

The definition of a decade is a “period of 10 years.”

Hence, 2013-2022 will be a ‘decade’

How can you have a debate with the definition “any period of 10 years?”

There's a reason why we call it the "2010s" or the "1950s" or the "390284890236986587678567861879560s"

People use decades and centuries as a unit of time related directly to dates, not always just any 10 years. This is seen in the “21st century” Again I’m not the one generating that debate, was just reiterating it to see what people on here thought

The concept of a year is an arbitrary number that a consensus of people agreed to go with.

Since the principle article is arbitrary, the terms to describe groups of those articles (decades/centuries/eons) are therefore arbitrary and open to interpretation.

Year 0 to year 9 is a decade. Once it hits 0 again it's new. Similar to a standard numbering system, you only have 0-9.
