I've seen this with Sheff in the outfield, could because he is a relatively poor fielder. His D is more palatable for me at 3B (better, except in critical moments, of course, unless those are the only ones that stick in my memory - very possible). Don't see issues like this much anymore since the fielding patches and while also trying to use good D in the OF. Used to happen with Reggie a lot, but not since the patch. Not saying it isn't a problem, but because it was Sheffield, wondering if it could be the case.

I've thought about this as well, but a good friend of mine who is also a really good player had it happen with Mike Trout multiple times. It's like you get sucked into the animation if you approach the ball marker from a certain angle. He said he tried to get behind the ball to make a running throw in one situation and in another he just moved his guy downwards towards the marker and he started jogging and bent down to play it off the hop even though there was plenty of time to make a normal catch. This is what happened to me as well.

That’s good info, I’d say you’re onto something with the angle stuff. The above sounds like the game has incorrectly interpreted the situations as and converted them to one of the new high-risk play situations.

That's what we thought too, but that's a problem because in both situations you did what you needed to do - you ran behind the ball to make a running throw to prevent a baserunner from advancing. And in the other example you just wanna make the most routine play in baseball, catch a pop up. If that is causing complications which animation that triggers, then I'd say they need to figure that out and patch it asap. I also know this problem has already been reported by several people including gameplay clips and yet it is still a thing. Maybe I should've added that in the initial thread.

I’ve seen the cpu outfielders do that animation in conquest games. It’s a catchable ball, but they suddenly pull up and let the ball drop.

I think it’s just another example of the game trying to be too clever.

Dumb animations have been a thing for years, but it's next level this year. It's like there are 23 different versions of that awful Griffey animation from last year where you're just locked into having it happen to you.

I guess the idea of adding those animations is nice, but if you can't get them to function properly and get the coding right for the wide variety of situations and messes everything up as a result, then I would prefer them to just leave them all out of the game. Just make the routine play, no fancy stuff.

It has nothing to do with the fielder. It happened to me in center field with 99 Mickey Mantle. It is a ridiculous animation that allows a base hit when there shouldn't be that's all there is to it.

I’ve had/seen this happen a few times since the recent patch. I’m not saying they touched fielding in the patch (patch notes say nothing about fielding), but it’s been happening more than it used to before it 🤷‍♂️

Have had this happen to me as well. Actually happened with lofton twice. I suspect the sensitivity of which we feather the analog might play into it as well. The first time was when I was getting behind the ball to hit the cutoff with his noodle. The second, I was scared of over running a ball hit directly forward of Lofton, so I did what I thought was safe, and feathered towards it so that it would be timed perfectly - instead, he freezes in motion and let's it drop at his feet when he had at least 2 seconds before ball landing. It was an events game so I didn't lose my [censored]. Close call for your game tho, glad you maintained composure

I ve had this happen twice in the last two days with mantle. It’s not like the pre patch problem where they wouldn’t lock on it’s seems to happen on shallow fly balls when they are charging in. They have plenty of time to get there but basically bounce out of the circle at the last second.

Interesting to see how frequently this is happening to people, regardless of fielder's ratings. Hopefully it'll be addressed very very soon.

Seems easy and is easy are very different. A clip would help the devs identify what happened and what could have caused it. Any chance of sharing a link to a clip?

Here you go ill share mines..

I had this happen today, with none other than... Gary Sheffield. Forced him to play it off the hop, even though he was there with excess time and he let it hop an inch from his foot instead of just catching it.

Sometimes things don’t go your way especially when playing a sim game. I could see this being worth a complaint if it was an arcade game but its not so just accept the gameplay.

With all due respect man, that is a terrible attitude. We all have every right to expect to be able to catch a fly ball without the game causing the outfielder to pull up short with a forced animation.

Simply evidence that player input really doesn’t matter. RNG has determined that it will be a single - so doesn’t matter at all what how the player approaches the ball. Sometimes it is like playing Strat 0 Matic - roll the dice and determine the outcome

I do think it's more of a coding issue where they added an animation (playing it off the hop) but it's being activated in situations where it's not wanted or required. The normal catch animation should always overwrite this imo which is clearly not the case right now.

Horrible animation. They literally stand over the drop shadow and it bounces perfectly into their glove like straight up. I’ve benefitted from the animation in RS and have yet to be screwed knock on wood.
