@soonermagic78 if you make any changes after you've selected the captain it unequips it. I had that happen to me as well.

You're like the 2nd or 3rd person I've seen mention this. Was this some sort of glitch to make showdowns easier?

Go to top left corner of map. There is a hidden territory there. Add fans around the top left corner and it will show you where you can attack on next turn.
I have 387/387 territories and received 16/16 goals complete. I didn't miss it.
