1897 The Chicago Colts (Cubs) of the National League establish the record for most runs scored in a game by one team when they clobber the Louisville Colonels, 36-7. The Cardinals will beat the Phillies 28-6 at Philadelphia's Baker Bowl in 1929 to set the modern NL mark.

1916 Only one baseball is used during the Reds' 9-6 win over the Cubs at Redland Field. There are no home runs or foul balls which land in the stands during the contest

1941 In a doubleheader with the Senators, Joe DiMaggio ties and then breaks the American League's consecutive game-hitting streak of 41 established by George Sisler. In the opener, he knots the record with a double off Dutch Leonard, and in the nightcap, 'the Yankee Clipper' tops the mark with a seventh-inning single against Walt Masterson.

1990 For the first time since 1917 (Hippo Vaughan and Fred Toney), two no-hitters are thrown on the same day when the A's Dave Stewart shuts out the Jays, 5-0 and the Dodgers' Fernando Valenzuela blanks the Cardinals, 6-0.

2004 At Bank One Ballpark, Randy Johnson records his 4000th career strikeout, whiffing Padres' third baseman Jeff Cirillo, a fellow USC Trojan, to become the fourth player in major league baseball history to reach the plateau. The 40-year-old Diamondbacks fireballer known as the Big Unit needs fewer innings (3,237 1/3) than Nolan Ryan (3,844 2/3), Roger Clemens (4,151), and Steve Carlton (4,991 1/3) to accomplish the feat.

2012 In the Diamondbacks' 9-3 victory over Milwaukee at Miller Park, Aaron Hill becomes the first modern-era player to hit for the cycle twice in one season since Babe Herman accomplished the feat with the Brooklyn Robins in 1931. Eleven days ago in Seattle, the Arizona second baseman also collected a single, double, triple, and home run in the game.

2015 Joc Pederson becomes the third rookie in major league history to hit 20 home runs before July when he goes deep off Allen Webster in the Dodgers' 10-6 loss to Arizona at Chase Field. The 23 year-old center fielder joins Wally Berger (Braves, 1930) and Albert Pujols (Cardinals, 2001) in accomplishing the feat as a freshman.

  • WAR MOST OVERRATED FORMULA IN BASEBALL
  • dbarmonstar_PSND dbarmonstar_PSN

Why do people only compare player from different ERA using WAR and not considering all stats or how good a player really was in his time based on how the game was in the era of that player. I will never understand it.

Truly Understanding what WAR is meant to be use for

    https://library.fangraphs.com/misc/war/

    Here is an article

    https://www.sportingnews.com/us/mlb/news/wins-above-replacement-war-what-is-it-how-to-calculate-baseball-reference-fangraphs-sabermetrics-analytics/1emmivy1vroy01owwnc9zj6mvr

Here is part of that article

    Stop the WAR?

Given how frequently it pops up in sabermetric discussions, WAR might sound like the pinnacle of sabermetrics. But no stat is perfect, and WAR is far from it.

The "godfather of Sabermetrics" Bill James wrote about his principal gripe with WAR, discussing the MVP race between Jose Altuve and Aaron Judge:

“Aaron Judge was nowhere near as valuable as Jose Altuve. Why? Because he didn’t do nearly as much to win games for his team as Altuve did. It is NOT close. The belief that it is close is fueled by bad statistical analysis — not as bad as the 1974 statistical analysis, I grant, but flawed nonetheless. It is based essentially on a misleading statistic, which is WAR. Baseball-Reference WAR shows the little guy at 8.3, and the big guy at 8.1.”

James’ argument represents the principal criticism of WAR — WAR is context neutral. If a player recorded only one single per game for 162 games, but that one single knocked in the game-winning run every game,WAR would credit that player with exactly as much value as a player who did the same thing but his team lost every game.

As a result, it would seem as though WAR is undervaluing the first player, and overvaluing the second player. Judge consistently performed poorly in high-leverage situations: he recorded the worst Clutch score of any player in 2017 per FanGraphs, despite leading the MLB in fWAR.

But in the words of Bertrand Russell, “WAR does not determine who is right…” so don’t think that WAR is the be all end all to every statistical discussion.

1894 Fred Clarke makes his major league debut, going 5-for-5 for the Louisville Colonels. The future Hall of Famer collects four singles and a triple.

1908 At New York's Hilltop Park, Red Sox legend Cy Young no-hits the Highlanders (Yankees), 8-0. The contest marks the third time the 41 year-old has accomplished the feat.

1909 The Cubs spoil the Pirates' debut at Forbes Field, 3-2. The new state-of-the-art ballpark, named for General John Forbes, an officer in the French and Indian War, is the first stadium to be made completely of steel and poured concrete.

1948 At Briggs Stadium, Indians right-hander Bob Lemon throws the first American League night time no-hitter, blanking the Tigers, 2-0. The Tigers' home was the last park in the Junior Circuit to use lights, installing illumination only two weeks ago.

1961 Improving his record to 14-2, Whitey Ford becomes the first pitcher in American League history to win eight games in one month with a 5-1 victory over the Senators at Yankee Stadium. The left-hander's five-hitter is his third complete game during the span and the team's 22nd win in June.

1962 Sandy Koufax becomes the first Dodger southpaw to throw a no-hitter since Nap Rucker accomplished the feat in 1908 when he keeps the expansion Mets hitless in the team's 5-0 victory in Los Angeles. The 26 year-old left-hander, en route to fanning 13, strikes out the first three batters he faces - Richie Ashburn, Rod Kanehl, and Felix Mantilla, on nine pitches to start the game with an immaculate inning.

1967 Cookie Rojas, who joined the Phillies in 1964, plays his ninth different position for the team when he takes the mound in a 12-3 loss to San Francisco. In his ninth-inning appearance, the All-Star infielder allows no runs and gives up just one hit, ending the frame by getting future Hall of Famer Willie Mays to fly out to right field in the Connie Mack Stadium contest.

1977 At Exhibition Stadium in Toronto, Cliff Johnson joins Joe DiMaggio and Joe Pepitone as the only players in Yankee history to hit two home runs in the same inning. The designated hitter goes deep twice in the eighth as the Bronx Bombers score eight runs in an 11-5 win over the Blue Jays.

1978 Giant first baseman Willie McCovey, on an 0-2 pitch thrown by Jamie Easterly, launches his 500th career home run over the left-field fence, becoming the 12th player to accomplish the feat. Stretch's historic homer occurs in the second inning of the opener of a doubleheader, which the Giants sweep from the Braves at Atlanta Fulton County Stadium, 10-9 and 10-5.

1985 Pedro Guerrero ties a major league record by hitting 15 home runs in June when he goes deep off Bruce Sutter in his final at-bat of the month. The eighth inning two-run round-tripper will prove to be the difference in the Dodgers' 4-3 victory over Atlanta at Chavez Ravine.

1995 At the Metrodome, Indians' designated hitter Eddie Murray collects his 3000th hit off Twins' right-hander Mike Trombley to become the 20th player to accomplish the feat. 'Steady Eddie' joins Pete Rose as only the second switch-hitter to reach the milestone.

1997 Rangers' hurler Bobby Witt becomes the first American League pitcher to hit a home run in a regular-season game in nearly 25 years. His round-tripper off Ismael Valdes helps Texas to beat the Dodgers in interleague action, 3-2.

1998 With an eighth-inning homer against the Diamondbacks, Cubs' slugger Sammy Sosa extends his major league record for home runs in a month, hitting his 20th round-tripper in June. At the start of July, the Chicago outfielder's season total is 31, four less than Mark McGwire, who also homered today.

2007 Making his major league debut in centerfield at Fenway Park, Jacoby Ellsbury becomes the first person from the Navajo tribe to play in the major leagues. The 23-year-old member of the Colorado River Indian Tribes, who will play a significant role in the Red Sox World Championship, batting .360 in 11 total postseason games, is put out by the catcher unassisted in his first big-league at-bat.

they just got caught, this didn't end all cheating- deep down a lot of people are thinking "dang why didn't we think of that"- I loathe the Astros, they've always been overly arrogant s.o.b.'s in my opinion, I'm just pointing out truth now we know why they were "overly arrogant"

Yeah they did get caught and what was done, nothing nothing at all to the players. That is the real problem, No one is saying others are not cheating, do not use that as an excuse that others did not get caught so it was ok for the Astros players to get away with it. Manfred is a tool. If this is how Manfred wants to be then Pete Rose should be re instated and Joe Jackson should be in the hall of fame if cheating does not matter cause everyone does it mentality.

1869 The Forest Citys, a team that includes unpaid amateur players who do not want compensation to remain 'pure,' play the first professional baseball game in Cleveland, losing to the Cincinnati Red Stockings, 25-6, in front of 2,000 spectators at Case Commons. The club will continue to play next season and become a charter member of the National Association Professional Baseball Players in 1871.

1903 Delahanty, who once hit four homers in one game, goes over a Niagara Falls railroad bridge and drowns. The circumstances concerning the Senator outfielder's death will remain a mystery, but rumors persist he was kicked off a train by a conductor for being drunk and disorderly.

1930 Carl Reynolds becomes only the second player in big-league history to homer in three consecutive innings when he goes deep in the first three frames of the 15-4 White Sox victory over the hometown Yankees. The Chicago outfielder's power surge includes two inside-the-park round-trippers.

1941 On a sweltering day in front of 52,832 fans at Yankee Stadium, Joe DiMaggio hits a three-run homer off Red Sox hurler D!ck Newsome to extend his consecutive game hitting streak to 45 games. The 'Yankee Clipper' surpasses Wee Willie Keeler's 1897 major league mark of 44 straight games with a hit accomplished when the diminutive outfielder played with the Orioles.

1962 Johnny Podres ties a major league mark record, striking out eight consecutive batters in LA's 5-1 victory over Philadelphia. The 29 year-old southpaw's streak begins with the third out in the top of the fourth frame and ends after the first out in the seventh inning of the Dodger Stadium contest.

1963 In one of baseball's most memorable pitching duels, Giants' right-hander Juan Marichal and the Braves' southpaw Warren Spahn both hurl 15 scoreless innings before Willie Mays ends the marathon contest with a homer off Spahnie in the bottom of the 16th giving San Francisco a 1-0 win.

1970 Joe Niekro keeps the Yankees hitless until Horace Clarke legs out an infield single with one out in the ninth inning of the team’s 5-0 victory at Tiger Stadium. The hit marks the third time the Bronx Bomber second baseman has broken up a no-hitter in the past four weeks, having spoiled no-no bids by Royals left-hander Jim Rooker (June 4th) and Red Sox righty Sonny Siebert (June 19th)

1970 Tony Horton hits for the cycle against Baltimore in the Indians' 10-9 victory at Memorial Stadium. The Cleveland first baseman completes the feat with a leadoff home run in the top of the ninth inning off Pete Richert.

1975 Don Baylor goes deep in his first three plate appearances in the Orioles' 13-5 victory over Detroit at Tiger Stadium. The trio of home runs today gives the Baltimore left fielder four consecutive round-trippers, having hit one off Reggie Cleveland in his last at-bat yesterday in the team's 10-6 loss to the Red Sox at Fenway Park.

1977 For the second time this season, White Sox first baseman Jim Spencer ties the club record set by Shoeless Joe Jackson in 1920, when he collects eight RBIs, duplicating a feat he first accomplished in May against the Indians. The 29 year-old infielder's home runs help to beat the Twins at Comiskey Park, 13-8.

1978 Ron Guidry improves his record to 13-0 with a 3-2 Yankee victory over the Tigers at the Bronx ballpark. The 27 year-old southpaw, known as Louisiana Lightning, establishes the best start is the best in franchise history en route to finishing the season with a 25-3 record.

1985 Astros' hurler Joe Niekro notches his 200th career victory. The Niekro brothers (Joe & Phil) will join the Perrys (Jim & Gaylord) as the only brothers to win at least 200 games per pitcher.

1986 The Blue Jays score three runs in the eighth inning to beat the Red Sox and Roger Clemens, 4-2. The loss prevents the 'Rocket' from getting a record-tying 15th consecutive winning decision.

1993 At Philadelphia's Veterans Stadium, the latest game in major league history ends at 4:40 am when relief pitcher Mitch Williams, in his first at-bat of the season, singles home the winning run in the tenth inning, giving the Phillies a 6-5 victory over the Padres. The game, which started at 1:26 am due to the three rain delays in Game 1 of the twin bill, eclipses the 3:35 am mark established in Atlanta on July 4, 1985, in a game that ended with fireworks after the Mets beat the Braves in 19 innings, 16-13.

1995 Dodger right-hander Hideo Nomo, who is leading the National League in strikeouts, becomes the first player from Japan to be selected for the major league All-Star game. As the starter for the Senior Circuit, the 26 year-old rookie tosses two scoreless innings in National League's 3-2 victory over their American League rivals at The Ballpark in Arlington.

2000 After hitting two home runs in a 2-1 victory over the Expos, Marlins' outfielder Mark Smith becomes a hero for the second time this day when he pulls a man from a smoke-filled car minutes before the car explodes.

2007 With skipper Joe Torre watching from the Yankee dugout, Roger Clemens, throwing eight innings of a two-hit ball of a 5-1 win over the Twins, becomes the eighth pitcher to record 350 career victories. The New York manager was the catcher for Warren Spahn's 350th win, making him a participant of the only two occasions that a pitcher has reached the milestone since 1928.

2013 At Great American Ball Park, Homer Bailey becomes the first pitcher since Nolan Ryan to throw two no-hitters before another hurler accomplishes the feat when he gives up just a walk in the Reds' 3-0 victory over the Giants. Last September, the 27 year-old Cincinnati right-hander, the youngest pitcher to have pitched two no-hitters in his career, hurled the first no-hitter in PNC Park history, a dramatic 1-0 victory over the hometown Pirates.
