Hate the Game, Not the Players

I just went 1-4, despite constantly SCORCHING the ball; they were loud outs, and my opponents got a few homers on "Early/Okay" swings.

That's not on them, they didn't cheat, and they probably have gotten similarly screwed by the hitting engine.

It seems like a lot of people only come on here to complain about getting screwed, but rarely to celebrate their walkoff on an error, bad animation, or cheap homer.

PSA: we're all going through it.

  • DanTheThrillerD DanTheThriller

If they don't fix Showdown for 21, I don't think I'll be able to manage the stress.

It was really the 8th inning showdown that did me in, as it was a non-stop loop of perfect runs 13-14 runs gained that were stomped out by Ian Anderson rolling DPs, Perfect lineouts to jumping IFs, or HR robberies or limping to Kershaw and dealing with the same.

The 2-run moment that requires you to K the only batter you face is insane, especially given that you often don't even get a SP to draft. It becomes a binary event, where the odds of success are minimal.

Maybe it's just this showdown, but they need to overhaul the mode, possibly giving you points for each moment objective you do complete. Overall, the mode is RNG within RNG, and appears to have stealth slider manipulation.

I, for one, just can't do it anymore.

People are so in denial that they blame the game for having mediocre records. They act as if their opponents aren’t playing the same game as them. Everyone gets screwed over in this game, it’s about overcoming that

I think that this is getting blown up a bit, yes they took sign stealing to far. Yes they were testing the limits of what was ok and not ok. But how often was it used? How often did it help. Even if you know a breaking ball is coming and you lay off doesn't mean it won't catch part of the black. Or if you know it is fastball, doesn't mean you can catch it. It is a hard game to play, and because of that guys have always been trying to cheat a little. We only go after the guys who get caught, while so many others act like they haven't done something similar. A lot of things still have to go right even if you know what the pitch is.

But knowing what the pitch is is more than half the battle.

    Example:
I played semi pro/collegiate ball for a couple seasons and there was a dude on my team who could throw GAS 97+ MPH. But he had like no usable offspeed pitches and walked a ton of guys. When we'd take live BP off him, the pitching coach would use it as an opportunity for him to work on his offspeed and would call out to him "change up" or "curveball" loud enough for everyone to hear it. When he wasn't walking dudes or beaning dudes, we hit it when we knew it was coming. We didn't hit it if we didn't know it was coming.

If you're geared up for that quick of a fastball, it's incredibly difficult to make the adjustment to an offspeed pitch. Unless you know it's coming. To act like that in itself isn't a huge advantage is just blind.

It's a massive advantage, compounded even more so at the MLB level.

It isn't "taking an advantage" or "testing the limits". It is 1000% cheating, and there is no way to validate it, and there is no minimizing it.

To your point, "If it's high, let it fly. If it's low, let it go."

If you know the pitcher is throwing a slider, curve, or change, you know how it's going to break.

If it's up, it will probably hang int he zone. If it's down, it's almost definitely a ball.

I can't imagine how easy hitting would have been in college with "guess pitch" mode on lol.

Exactly. If you know it's a curveball or slider, you can lean out and anticipate the break and hold back. If you know it's a fastball, you know to cheat early and shorten up. Knowing what pitch is coming is more than half the battle. Most hitting drills are geared towards timing, so you can adapt to the pitch mid-flight. Making meaningful contact with a pitch you know is coming really isn't that hard, unless it's a fastball you can't handle or a knuckleball or something crazy like that.

Even for folks who haven't played real baseball at a level where people throw hard and also have breaking stuff, the same idea applies when you're playing MLBTS. If you know what pitch your opponent is going to throw, it's an extreme advantage when it comes to making meaningful contact and hitting it. Claiming it isn't because "you still have to make contact with the ball" is just flat out ridiculous.

I have pointed that out, multiple times: dismissing that is willful ignorance.

"Guess pitch" exists for a reason!

Also, when you watch the banging videos, the relay is sent before the wind and release, so the batter has plenty of time to adjust their approach.

    Even with relievers, it's pre-wind...

People just wanna sell quickly. I'm assuming you're upset because you're being undercut all the time. You could always hold onto your card(s) for a few hours when the traffic on it is lower and all the undercut cards have been sold.

I've heard this argument before, but how does it sell it faster? It's still first-come, first-serve. And there are certainly people that will still 1-stub you lower at lower prices.

Because by lowering a price by 10K for example, the second guy trying to sell is most likely to think "well that's a bit too much to drop, so I'll wait for a few minutes until this card is off the market".

Except that’s NOT happening, and people are chasing values down into the toilet.

It wasn’t like this in 19 or 20...did everyone get dumber?

It has always been like this, you just never saw it. People don't care about 10K on a 100K+ card, stubs are made pretty easily in this game.

You must be talking about player cards, because I stick to equipment, which used to be stable.

It definitely wasn’t like this, because I would literally do 100+ equipment transactions/day and not see this.

I can definitely see it happening with player cards, because they’re 1) rarer and 2) usually WAY more expensive.

Either way, the whole undercutting phenomenon is nothing new and in my opinion people have every right to do so. If I have a gazillion items in my binder that I'm willing to sell for half the worth, that would be my decision wouldn't it? If that halts anyone's progress on the market, tough luck.

    It’s your right.

    It’s also not smart.

    Both things can be true.

  • Randomized hitting.
  • DanTheThrillerD DanTheThriller

    @theu715 said in Randomized hitting.:

How about fixing pitching? The randomness of pitching has made things even worse. Go back and play MLB 17 or even 18 and see how many times you hit your spot and the pitch goes middle middle or hangs up a ton when you’re throwing below the zone. Hitting will always be somewhat random, but pitching should be 100% user input based as far as pitches going to the location you’re throwing to.

Yeah, I've lost A LOT of games to a perfect pitches completely missing their spot: how do we account for doing everything right and RNG taking over?

  • The Equalizer aka rubberbanding
  • DanTheThrillerD DanTheThriller

It's just an RNG problem: I hit green on the meter, and they miss by a foot down the middle.

Luckily, its a common catcher, and my diamond player squared up the same pitch for a lazy fly off his common pitcher.

What's this? My diamond pitcher gave up an "Early/Okay" 440ft. bomb...that's interesting.

  • Showdown is Trash
  • DanTheThrillerD DanTheThriller

If they don't tweak Showdown in 21, I'm not buying it.

Baseball is a game of RNG, and it's nonsensical to string RNG-contingent events together. There HAS to be a better way to make sure that you don't perfect-perfect yourself into a bunch of restarts.

Maybe they should give you a perk voucher for each showdown you complete that carries over to a restart? Maybe let us exchange extra players for perks and vice versa.

All I know is that I've grinned through all the Extreme moments and have 0 interest in lucking my way through a moment daisy chain with random players, perks, and outcomes without some sort of mitigation factor.

@JustASeal0 said in Who will be the top 3 outfielders next year in DD?:

People are slandering Judge like he's not a top 8 player in baseball when healthy

He’s not though. Trout, Yelich, Betts, Arenado, are all clearly better. Bellinger has had 2 out of 3 good years and he’s a slightly better defender. Acuna and Judge are close but Judge is 6 years older than Acuna so I’ll take him. We will see this year if Bregman is actually good without cheating. Soto is a better overall hitter but the poor defense on Soto gives Judge the edge. Rendon is better. I’ll give you top 15 but we have really only seen 1 year of what Judge can do. He hasn’t been healthy enough to crack the top 10 players in baseball IMO

Except, since his debut, he's still 6th in overall fWAR, having played fewer games than 1-5.

For reference, Bregman is 5th, and he's played 100 MORE games than Judge, and Judge has a higher defensive rating than 3 of those 5 players.

Not putting Judge in the top 5 is an egregious error.

Lineup: More power needed. Upgrade 1B, 3B, LF with power hitters. Ruth is free. J-Ram is free. Griffey is coming out this week.

Rotation: Get rid of everyone but Gibson. You'll pick up Seaver for free as you get Ruth. Kershaw and Maddux are worth the stubs.

Bullpen: I like the lefties. I'd get rid of Kimbrel and then Rodney. Mo, Kenley, Goose are the best 3 righty relievers in the game.

This REALLY helps, Bob (LOVE the handle lol.).

My pitching worries me, and relievers were EVERYTHING for me in 19.

    LF Juan Soto
    3B Manny Machado

Travis d’Arnaud (no reason this card is on roster, should be replaced)

    Revamped Starting Pitchers
    Jacob deGrom (Team Affinity)
    Chris Sale (Community Market)
    Bob Gibson (Conquest)
    Clayton Kershaw
    Shane Bieber

    Bullpen is fine
