New to online...

I've played the show for a couple years now but, never really played online. Trying to get into it now but, really unsure where to start. I get the idea of earning packs to create a good DD team and then competing with them. What exactly are programs, 2nd inning, 1st inning etc? Not sure exactly where to start?

just grind the showdown for the next month

This is about the first inning program, and we are now on the second. But the principles still apply:

Dude, once you get into the world of online its like you've sold your soul to noobness...its very had to come back from that. Before you notice you've got an addiction to Red Bull and hot pockets and you're waiting for the next flash sale like a crack addict waiting for their next hit.

One year too late. I don’t know if it’s this year’s game or servers, or the strain on networks across NA because of C-19, but from one game to the next there’s no consistency, like at all. I have about the same winning % as last year, but 10% the fun I had, even with lineouts galore that was 19.

First place you will probably want to start is Events. Get a good feel for all star difficulty online while racking up some innings for Team Affinity and program missions.
Once you are comfortable with the online randomization features of this game, build up your DD team by doing the player programs and team affinities. Or drop a couple hundred bucks on stubs for a head start.
You can compete in early RS levels with a team of golds.

Appreciate all the good info. Definitely not dropping stacks for a DD team. I've been playing legend difficulty. Struggling with hitting online. Making contact but, getting mainly grounders.

As somebody with similar experience (offline player of 12 years, mostly Franchise, Season and RTTS) who enjoys the game immensely, avoid ranked seasons if you want to still feel positive about the game. After playing RTTS in 20 for three weeks I decided to try achieve the final trophy for 19 which is to make it to Championship Series in Ranked Seasons. After 50 games or so I’ve shelved it as not worth the frustration. RTTS is fun, ranked seasons is infuriating.
I would recommend finding a suitable league instead. My few friendly games so far have been very positive and enjoyable experiences.

Is ranked seasons the same thing as playing a ranked game online? I got destroyed in a game 9-4 yesterday. I am interested in joining a league though.

Ranked games and ranked season arent the same. Ranked games are real rosters that the teams have more or less at the time you play and ranked seasons is the diamond dynasty ranking system of playing games a d advancing with hat team online.
As far as what to do first for DD, do a search on YouTube to see some what to do first type of walkthroughs. Some of them are pretty good. The other suggestion I have is completely ignore joshjays or whatever his psn is. Guy is a pathetic troll and a no lifer who thinks he is funny but just comes off like the little spoiled child in the playground everyone hates but he thinks everyone loves him. Do yourself that favour.
Good luck to you in diamond dynasty!!
