Curious on what changed with using retired players
-
What I don’t understand is what changed from older games to now. In older games like MVP 05 they have every legend available to play. Why were games able to use everyone then and not now? Was it a lawsuit by a retired player? It seems like as soon as card collecting modes came along everything changed im curious as to what happened.

Players rights restrictions are heavily enforced and monitored with all the digital content we have today. It was such a small market back then.
I remember when Barry Bonds alias was John Dowd.

Developers started commodifying retired players via micro transactions and DLC and the players wanted their cut.

MVP 05 had like 20 legends total. I think you're romanticizing that aspect a lot.
Edit: Googled it. Ok they had 63. Still way less than these games..

Lou Boudreau, Rick Ferrell, Bob Lemon, Bobby Doerr, Hoyt Wilhelm, Jim Bunning, Phil Rizzuto, Early Wynn, George Kell, Red Schoendienst, Roy Campanella, Buck Leonard, Satchel Paige.
Those are the only legends that have not shown up in the show that were in MVP 05.Other than Satchel and Campanella, I could care less about any of those guys...

Mvp 05 was a example there were games where they even had full negro league team heck there’s one year where that had full WBC squads. I’m not expecting every person who has played irl I’m just curious what had changed and why they can only add 10 guys every year bc cleary they had access to these guys pre micro transactions. There’s so many guys they still need from the 80s onward it’s just boring grinding for the same cards year after year imo.

That makes sense and tbh I don’t blame players for wanting to be paid for there likeness. I kinda figured MLB would’ve had something in place like the WWE has. Once anyone signs with the WWE they own your likeness forever and can use it how they please.

Also you have to think about this guys that played in 05 are considered legends & fan favorites now in 2020. And that’s what I meant why was it easier then to add retired players as opposed to now. But there are good answers here that explain it to me.

I just literally named off the legends mvp had that the show doesn't. That's all of them...

I don't blame the players at all, especially with how much ancillary revenue publishers rake in.
It's kind of cool to picture a lower tier legend's grandkids being able to go to college or buy a car because the estate is actively earning modern day royalties, too.

....Okay and like he said that’s one game he was using as an example. Tap Sports is a mobile game with multiple times more HOFers and legends this game doesn’t have. Why does a mobile game have more content than the full title on console that is monopolized by the MLB?
