Who are your bench players & why?
-
Curious how everyone uses their bench & just might poach some suggestions.
-
This is my strategy, if I have the right cards for it. Not sure if it’s right or wrong.
-
Catcher, I like a switch hitter and if they have a secondary position that’s a plus.
-
Speedy guy that plays multiple positions and is good defensively. Late inning pinch runner then defensive replacement.
-
Always have two options from each side of the plate, switch hitters help here.
-
Reinforcements for the 2 or 3 spots where I am weakest offensively.
So my ideal bench would be something like Carlos Santana when he had C eligibility, Eli Willits, then a guy really good against righties and a guy really good against lefties.

I think it depends what your starting lineup looks like. I don't carry platoon bats right now because I have a solid mix or lefty, right and switch hitter in my starting lineup. My bench is mostly speed with position flexibility. With that I also look for strong defense for my OF. Soto gets subbed out in left at the end of every game for me. Raleigh is my one question mark. I have had Pudge on the bench for defense replacement but caring an extra catcher limits you. Not many guys have secondary catcher. Mauer can play 1st and C but he is not great defensively and is slow.
- Utility guy who can play anywhere- Figgins if you can do the set. WBC Castro is also amazing. Both switch hitters. I like them both as starters but right now both are on the bench.
- Base running/ Defensive OF- PCA, Max Clark, Corbin Carroll, etc.
- Covering whatever position you are lacking- 1st base is my weakest position so guys like Mauer or Bellinger help me there and they can serve in other roles too.
- Total flex position- (backup catcher or platoon bat, or just another fast guy) this spot rotates for me but it usually is a decent switch hitter bat (Berkman) or someone with a swing i like. When in doubt just go with Elly De La Cruz.

Combination of speed and switch hitters. If you use L or R hitters, just make sure you can hit R vs R / L vs L because they can sub reliever in after you sub in your bat.

I have an avg bench
Backup C
Backup IF who can play 2nd, 3rd, SS with a little speed
Back OF
Backup 1B who can mash
However... I also have Cool Papa Bell as one of my staring pitchers so I have an extra Pinch Runner with speed who can also play 1b/OF
It doesn't work online but since I'm pretty well offline only it gives me a bonus bench player that I use in tight situations
