Ranked Co-Op with a Non-Believer

Found myself taking a very satisfying L in ranked co-op last night. Playing with my friend who (1) doesn't play the game nearly as much as I do and (2) thinks I'm full of it when I talk about the flaws of this game. You'd think he's getting commission from SDS the way he talks. Always saying stuff like "that's the brilliance of The Show" when talking about the stat tracking / accounting for each player individually... not realizing how many problems this game really has.
Anyway, I'm hosting which means I'm in control of pinch hitters, relief pitchers and so on. Small aside, but we're only up 1-0 in like the 5th and he says "let's stop talking about (whatever player we were talking about) and focus up." I'm up to bat and say "talking about (whatever player we were talking about) is going to help me hit this home run." The very next pitch I hit over the wall. Kinda cool, but also weird how we seemingly hit the majority of our home runs with the default players we didn't personally add to our lineup.
So we're up 2-1. I make it through the 7th inning with 99 Randy Johnson, our starter. But I noticed that the opposing team was coincidentally starting to hit the ball harder that inning after playing pretty poorly the previous 6 innings. He had the big yellow line, high confidence and was still at 78 pitches, so my friend insisted on keeping him in the 8th inning. I told him that was a bad idea and that we needed to make a switch because the comeback logic / game scripting was about to take over. He took it as a jab against him and insisted him in control of The Unit who had yet to get the "starting to get tired" notice, a big yellow line and max'd out confidence would get us to the 9th unscathed. I mean, sure, The Unit pitched a game where he threw 160 pitches... but this is the God-awful MLB The Show series and pitchers break down at around 60-70 pitches, if not earlier. First batter hits the ball in the gap, but only gets a single. I insist on changing the pitcher and once again am blown off. Next hitter hits a 2 run homer to take the lead and ultimately win the game. Called it much like my home run shot. Despite all this, though, he insisted it was solely on him and that the game wouldn't have come up with that result had he just hit his spots when pitching.
He's a lot like many people I've met on this forum. He can see it happen in real time, right after I told him what was going to happen and still tell me I'm full of you-know-what. I wish more people were good at critical thinking and listen to other people's experiences. I've been saying it for months of 25's life span and for years prior to that. When there's smoke, there's fire. Coincidences shouldn't happen regularly.

Who would have thought that a starting pitcher who is getting tired and who the opponents have seen for 7 innings would perform worse?

In the quote I copied, what do words 8-18 say? And how is a man who pitched 160 pitches in a game breaking down after less than half of that? One of the things my friend loves is how they take real world stats into play...but I must confess, I'm confused on how Randy Johnson's getting worn out at 78 pitches replicates the real thing. Also, while they're seeing Randy Johnson, my friend and I are alternating innings. We don't pitch the same. So I don't know if "seeing him for 8 innings" holds the same weight here. Great to see you, man! Your last reply on my other thread had a lot of substance, but you've regressed a little here.

I dont think anyone wants to play in a game where any pitcher who played before 2000 can go CG without getting tired. Sometimes you do have to sacrifice a little bit of realism for the sake of making the game more enjoyable
