Are 99 OVR Cards becoming meaningless at this stage?
-
They have unfortunately gotten the customer base accustomed to 99s by the ASG and I'm not sure how they can go back at this point.
Go look at some of the attributes of the Finest cards that came out in 2017 or 2018 before things got crazy with 125 everything. It is awesome having so much variety in the binder when it comes to 99s, but on the flip side nothing feels really special when mostly every card is on the same elite level.
-
some stats are just meaningless now. 125 contact should be for .340 hitters, not something that is common. Ketel Marte does not remotely deserve a 125/120 split unless maybe its a 2019 Flashback

There is definitely a progression within the 99s
At what point does the progression become meaningless, though.
If you're a good player using an All-Star 99, what actual discernible difference in your gameplay would a slightly progressed version have?I'm [censored] and I don't notice nor see any improvement in my output with the slightly better 99s.
-
@Dolenz_PSN Yes they usually are, they overdo it as usual, which is why the game is at it's best at the start and pre-All Star break. Playing with the silvers, golds and low diamonds is MUCH better. The stats seem to play more.
Surprised this game even has an audience at this point
-
This has been an issue for years. Players want that adrenaline rush from getting 99s. Eventually you get Josh Bell, Jasson Dominguez, Willie Castro, Bryan Reynolds, and Jake Mangum cards who are on par or better than HoFers.
It's goofy but I don't think the remaining fan base AS A WHOLE (not me) cares about realism as much as arcade style play and that adrenaline rush from seeing those 99s become super-99s become it's-over-9000 99s.
-
If you want realism I guess you use the Live series. All 99s are not the same so maybe it should go up to 125. More 95-98s would also be a solution.

Makes you wonder what the true OVR would be for these new cards if the OVR was not capped.
I really, really, really want them to scrap the 99 cap. Given your analysis above, it obviously doesn't make sense any more.

@DoIHearBossMusic_PSN
It doesn’t, really. These people are just here for the shits and giggles. 90% is most likely gone. -

125 contact should be for .400 hitters, back when they introduced 125cap they had said that 99 (cap then) represented a .333 avg

I think the power creep should've been slower. Get the big collection 99 here and there that's hard to obtain but like the juiciest of juicy shouldn't come out until finest imo
I think most people still want to feel like they're improving their team
When new finest drops it'll just be a lateral move
-
Why would you want the best cards to come out in November?? You guys make no sense. Very few people still playing in November.

^this, yes.

This is exactly the predicament. You need to keep the player base engaged when the game is still at its peak which would be around mid season.
Hard to fault SDS for their progression model considering the people still playing in November are probably not their target audience since they know the lifers ain't going anywhere.
-
The notion of making superhuman cards a way to keep the player base engaged is pure nonsense. And honestly I think releasing all the 99s so soon may reduce the game's longevity, not increase it.
Maybe instead of releasing 99s at the all star break they could have made actual TA content? Have a ranked season that isnt a copy/paste of every other one somehow? How about a cool event of some kind that both offline and online players can enjoy?

Why?
Because I've been playing dd since 2020 and by the time finest comes out every year I don't care cause my team is already maxed. Finest should be fun and exciting and it's simply a lateral move as nothing really makes my team better.
That makes perfect sense to me

The term “meta score” is still so hard to look at
🫣 -
The term meaningless is irrelevant in October on MLB the Show. All cards released October through November should ALL be extremely juiced. The season is over and once this ranked season ends it'll be the Forever program and we might only see 1 more card once that starts. I don't care and would prefer at this point to see extremely juiced unreal cards released. No one seriously wants to see them release a Santadar with less then 100 contact on both sides which is unreal for him. This is how progression works and it keeps some players relevant.

I'd say don't underestimate the amount of players who just stop playing as much when the regular season is over. I finally got my 99 Stan Musial and like most cards that I earn this late I have barely used him because I am winding down for the year

Right, I think its more there is an extreme overestimation of people that actually care about god mode cards. If they exist people will use them, but if the All Star Jose Ramirez was his end game card and balanced against the end game pitchers that would be fine too for most.
People aren't leaving because they don't have 99s yet, they are leaving because its their time to move on.
And the bigger issue is for most of the year there was just a sub 90 Stan Musial, or a gold Gary Carter, or any number of other cards. I remember enjoying the early Turkey Stearnes and looking forward to a diamond one in the middle of the year that never came.
