Created Hall of Famers wearing their retired numbers

I saw recently rosters in the roster vault created by MA Stromley. Somehow he was able to get players whom have had their numbers retired be able to wear their numbers without them being automatically changed.
We used to be able to do that without a problem in previous years. But, we haven't been able to this year.
I tried to do it after I saw his rosters. It still automatically changed their numbers.
Does anyone know how he did it?
